Purity - Measuring cocaine purity through crack conversion

Can someone explain the logic behind testing how pure cocaine is by turning it into crack? Is this a very reliable method? What are the pros and cons?

There was a method about how to filter powder into water, use water to make freebase, then filter the frebase in a two-stage method before converting back to powder.

But will lidocaine and other -caines turn into base too? What about excess alkaloids like hygrine? Or does only cocaine turn into base in this way?

The worry SWIM has is that you're never likely to get a 100% yield when you put something through any sort of chemical process. Won't some goodies be lost when converting to crack and back?

SO after the ammonia reaction what you have is freebase? Why have I heard that making freebase requires ether? And what is this I've heard about a way to make freebase involving an ice cube and a microwave?
