Waking up

As a college student, swim has often had to manipulate his sleep schedule around early classes, and late night partying/studying. He loves his sleep and HATES waking up early, but this particular trick has gotten him to many early classes/exams after late nights. Swim sets one alarm about 40 minutes before he has to wake up, and one at the needed wake up time. He then places 5-10 mg IR adderall on his nightstand. Wake up for first alarm, eat adderall, collapse back into slumber. By the time the second alarm goes off you'll be ready to go. Plus it makes that first cigarette even better!

Hope this helps the other lazy bums out there.

Re: Waking up

SWIM usually just plans to study the night before an exam because he functions better amped up on no sleep than he does groggy and tired in the morning. But if SWIY is looking to manipulate their sleep, they might want to consider modafinal. I've read a number of articles about the concerns about using stimulants as mental steroids in academic settings, and many articles have mentioned that a popular dosing technique with modafinal is to take one right before sleep, resulting in only requiring 5-6 hours of sleep at most and being wakeful and energetic rather than wanting to remain in bed once waking up.

Re: Waking up

My doctor usually advocates doing this with stimulant medication for ADHD, she cites other patients that report doing so solves this and that problem.

It's especially beneficial for those who have trouble sleeping from taking stimulating medications.

I did this when I was taking concerta, it helped a little bit, but it wasn't anything to get excited about. Oddly though, it easily became routine for me. With Vyvanse (and when I was on Adderall) I found that I realllly like doing this, it's the best way to wake up, yet I often forget to, it's weird.

I wouldn't recommend any SWIMers get in this habit without a prescription, though...

Re: Waking up

My doctor has also suggested the traditional method of waking up 40-60 minutes earlier and taking my first dose. I'm just such a heavy sleeper that once I fall asleep, I'll sleep easily for at least a few hours even if I just got a full night of sleep. So when I tried this with Adderall, for me, it failed miserably. I think I was trying to wake up by 10am and didn't wake up until 1pm, or something similar. And despite sleeping well at night, nothing can ever be perfect, so my sleep problems are in the form of actually being able to fall asleep. But anyway, since waking up a bit earlier doesn't work for me I usually just set my alarm like 30 minutes early to allow for ample snooze button usage to mentally prepare for the difficult task of waking up. After that I have to just start my day and wait 30-40 minutes before I start to feel the effects of my medication, but I've been able to cope because I wouldn't consider the costs and difficulties to be greater than the benefits I get from taking the med.
