Replacing SSRI with Amphetamines?

SWIM is currently taking Celexa, an SSRI and this has given him a noticable drop in motivation so he started back his Ritalin which he was taking about 2 years earlier for his ADD. The reason SWIM is taking SSRI's is because he has Borderline Personnality Disorder (somewhat similar to Bi-Polar) and it has helped tremendously with Anger outbursts which he had almost daily.

I started reading about amphetamines, mostly Dexedrine and Adderall, and found out some reported being less aggressinve and more patient.
Do SWIYyou think this would be a better solution for SWIM?

Re: Replacing SSRI with Amphetamines?

I've heard many cases of prescribed amphetamines causing extra anxiety as well...be sure to pay attention to the negatives as well as what he perceived positive effects of a drug are before asking for it. Don't be afraid to tarnish the image of the drug even if it seems like a panacea for everything that ails SWIY, ultimately SWIY will need to decide for himself because we could never understand his situation well enough to give a recommendation worth taking.

Re: Replacing SSRI with Amphetamines?

SWIM has a friend, bipolar who cannot take ssri as they triggers manic episodes. But swim does not know about the physiological similarities between bipolar and borderline.

How has taking MPH again changed SWIY's motivation problem?

If SSRI help with the main problem it would not be wise to switch to something fundamentally different as amps. Talk to the shrink about the option to switch to a NSRI or take a NARI in conjunction with the SSRI (dunno if that is common practice).

Re: Replacing SSRI with Amphetamines?

The Ritalin helped SWIM a great bit but SWIM still thinks something stronger would have a more beneficial effect...maybe a combination of amps and SSRI since it helps SWIM whith his aggressive episodes.
At least he's now able to get out of bed and gather his efforts to work a litlle.
SWIM will see his Psychiatrist soon so he'll ask for advice then.
I'll report back as soon as SWIM gives me some news.
