Dana Beal arrested

This message arrived on the ibogaine-list yesterday. Does anybody have more information on this?

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: [Ibogaine] Dana needs help
Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2008 10:28:34 -0400
From: Howard Lotsof <hslotsof@phantom.com>

Dana Beal called me lat night to ask for assistance in raising legal fees and bail. In route to establish an ibogaine treatment facility he was stopped under circumstances I do now know and arrested for money laundering relating crimes. All of the funds were seized by the police. I contacted his attorney Ronald Tulin in Charleston, Illinois. I had hoped to provide the attorney's contact information but, Mr. Tulin does not want to be inundated with calls and asked me to coordinate any money collection and donations towards Dana's bail and legal fund.

You can contact me off list <hslotsof@phantom.com>. Thanks for your assistance

Howard

Re: Dana Beal arrested

Dana always has a large roll of money with him. It's gathered from people who support his work, while he himself stays well below the poverty-line of economics.

I'd want a more full report before putting out "the word" regards funding. But I don't need to know what the real reasons are for the swine to have gone after him. I've known Dana (and Abbie) for decades. This shit is expected.

Please update/apprise on developments as they become available. Tell him GreenYip says high.

Re: Dana Beal arrested

Just came in:
Quote:
Little new information coming from over the pond at the moment.

I spoke with ex high times editor Steve Bloom a little earlier, who tells me Dana was caught in possession of a large amount of cash, thought to be $250,000 dollars.

Its suspected the charges relate to money laundering but thats NOT CONFIRMED.

He's languishing in a prison somewhere in Illinois, in the hope he can raise bail, which has been set at the same amount as was confiscated, which tells me they mean business, and must be sure of having a case against Dana Beal

Re: Dana Beal arrested

A Yippie Veteran Is in Jail Far From the East Village

By COLIN MOYNIHAN
Published: June 11, 2008

It has been more than 40 years since Dana Beal came to prominence as a theoretician for the Youth International Party, known as the Yippies, and embarked on a long career in the world of countercultural politics.

Dana Beal at 9 Bleecker Street, a longtime home for the Youth
International Party. He was arrested in Illinois last week.

Since 1973, Mr. Beal and other Yippies have used a brick tenement on Bleecker Street, just west of the East Village, as a base for planning large-scale events, including demonstrations at national political conventions and worldwide marches calling for the legalization of medical marijuana, among other causes.

But Mr. Beal, 61, was far from the national stage last week when he found himself arrested on charges of money laundering in Mattoon, Ill., about 170 miles south of Chicago. He is being held in a county jail in nearby Charleston, awaiting an appearance before a judge on Thursday.

Ronald Tulin, a Charleston lawyer representing Mr. Beal, said that the police found his client with a large sum of cash, which was sniffed by police dogs.

“They’re saying the money smelled like marijuana,” Mr. Tulin said.

Mick McAvoy, the first assistant state’s attorney for Coles County, said that officers from the Mattoon Police Department arrived on June 3 at a restaurant to respond to a report that two women were fighting inside. The police determined that the women were traveling with two men, one of them Mr. Beal, in a van parked outside, he said.

Mr. McAvoy said witnesses told the police that Mr. Beal had placed bags beneath nearby vehicles. Mr. McAvoy said the police found two duffel bags containing more than $150,000 in cash. At that point, Mr. McAvoy said, a drug-sniffing dog was brought in to smell the bags.

A spokeswoman for the Coles County sheriff said that Mr. Beal was facing a charge of money laundering. He is being held in $250,000 bail.

A. J. Weberman, a fellow Yippie who helped to popularize the practice of garbology (searching through trash for journalistic clues), said Mr. Beal had told friends that he was traveling with cash because he was planning to finance a clinic. Mr. Weberman said the clinic was to study ibogaine, a derivative of an African shrub that researchers have said can be used to counter addiction.

Mr. Beal is a longtime advocate of ibogaine, which he says produces a trancelike state when ingested that lasts for hours and can be used to interrupt addiction to heroin, nicotine and alcohol.

With a bushy white moustache that makes him resemble a Civil War-era cavalry colonel, Mr. Beal is a well-known figure in the East Village, where he often roams the streets wearing a tan corduroy blazer and brown leather boots. Over the past several days, friends have been sending e-mail messages and posting notes online, trying to raise bail money.

“I’m giving the whole Internet a shout out to raise money,” said David Peel, a Yippie and musician from the East Village. “We don’t want to see Dana Beal entrenched in jail.”

Mr. Beal joined the Youth International Party shortly after it was formed in the late 1960s. While Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin were widely recognized as Yippie leaders during the fractious days of the Democratic National Convention in 1968, Mr. Beal emerged as one of the most visible leaders among slightly younger group members who called themselves Zippies.

Over the years, 9 Bleecker Street has served as a meeting place, teach-in center and editorial office. Newspapers called The Yipster Times and Overthrow have been published there. In 1981, a bomb was detonated outside the front door, injuring two police officers. The bomber was never arrested.

Lately, No. 9, as it is affectionately known, has experienced a renaissance. Mr. Beal brokered an agreement in 2004 in which a nonprofit partnership bought the building for just over $1 million and allowed the Yippies to continue operating there. Since then Mr. Beal has overseen renovations. The Yippies started a museum detailing their history inside the building in 2007 and turned the ground floor into a cafe and performance gallery.

John Penley, a photographer from the Lower East Side who knows Mr. Beal, said that being in possession of money that smelled like marijuana would not necessarily be an indication of guilt for somebody involved in Mr. Beal’s sort of advocacy work.

“He raises money from all over the world,” Mr. Penley said of Mr. Beal. “And a lot of it comes from potheads.”Since 1973, Mr. Beal and other Yippies have used a brick tenement on Bleecker Street, just west of the East Village, as a base for planning large-scale events, including demonstrations at national political conventions and worldwide marches calling for the legalization of medical marijuana, among other causes.

Re: Dana Beal arrested

Beal makes bail

New York marijuana activist Dana Beal is free on bail. He paid $7,500 and was released after today's hearing in Coles County Court in Charleston, IL. Beal was being held on $750,000 bail for money laundering. The charge was reduced to obstruction of justice. Dana Beal

Beal was traveling through Illinois with two women and another man last week when an argument between the women at a restuarant alerted the police. Beal's attempt to intervene and the fact that he was carrying $150,000 in cash resulted in his arrest. He may be charged with money laundering at a later date. A preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 4.

The money was reportedly for Ibogaine clinics to be opened in the U.S. Ibogaine is derived from the African iboga plant and is used as an addiction therapy. A major supporter of Ibogaine therapy, Beal also runs the annual Global Marijuana March from the YIPPIE headquarters at 9 Bleecker St. in New York.

Alfa: The clinics are being established outside the United States - where ibogaine remains a Schedule I controlled substance. The idiotic reasons for this can be traced to patents held by US-based pharmaceutical corporations and their pet-dope: Methadone.

Thanks for posting the update. It would be nice if the dogs sniffed the cop's wallets. No doubt they would have alerted to the presence of cocaine.

I'll see what I can do from my outpost.

YIPPIE! MOTHERFUCKERS!

Re: Dana Beal arrested

I loved the yippie museum and events sponsored by the group, I really hop things turn out well, the charges don't seem like they could stick from what's reported.

Re: Dana Beal arrested

just arrived over the ibogaine-list:
-------------------------------------------------
Okay, here's what's happening with Dana:

The prosecution is attempting to re-instate the class one felony --
money laundering -- that was dropped (he is currently only being
charged with obstruction of justice). This changes the playing field
slightly, and makes Dana liable for a maximum of 36 years (instead of
6), and a minimum of 4 years (instead of 1).

Fighting the charges requires funds to pay his legal fees pertaining
to both past, present, and future litigation. The total bill which is
still due Right At This Moment is: $14K. This will increase as both
sides begin shoveling wheelbarrows filled with crap -- erm, I meant to
say: important legal papers and documents -- at one another.

If you are a United States citizen, you've already done your part, in
helping waste everybody's time and fuck over Dana, 'cuz your taxes are
funding "The People" vs. Dana.

If you support the massive amount of work and effort that Dana has put
into the legalization and ibogaine movement over decades of time: YOUR
HELP is urgently needed.

*** Please Help / and PLEASE *READ THIS* ***

There are 101 different "Help Dana Beal!" messages, threads, and
articles being splattered all over teH InterNeTs. While all of this
is important, what's EVEN MORE important, is actually doing something
HELPFUL if you're in a position to do so.

Hundreds of messages flew by in many threads, and I haven't read most
of them, but some of what was posted is just ... wrong.

Please *DO NOT* send money or checks to Dana's lawyers. Please *DO
NOT* send email or make phone calls to Dana's lawyers. They really
don't wanna chat with hundreds of random people; this accomplishes
nothing much. All it does is put lawyers into a really shit mood
because they *really* DO NOT want to hear from you, or chat (unless
you write for the NY Times). They're also not accounting firms, and
NOT in a position to accumulate a boatload of small checks and
payments, and then apply the bill to a single account. It doesn't
work that way.

Please *DO NOT* send money to the jail... I have no idea who the fuck
came up with this, or where it came from, but ... what the fuck? Dana
doesn't smoke cigarettes, he doesn't need hundreds or thousands of
dollars for commissary? He was in jail, not serving years in prison.
If you send money directly to the jail, what you're basically doing is
donating your cash to their jail. That's about it.

*** WHAT YOU CAN DO *RIGHT NOW* ***

If your life, or the lives of any of your friends or family, have been
enriched by all the tireless work and effort that Dana has put into
ibogaine, please send your money orders or checks to:

Yippie Holdings
9 Bleecker St.
NYC, NY 10012

Made payable ONLY TO: Yippie Holdings, LLC.

Do not make out checks or money orders to Dana, CNW, or whatever
random person/organization/thing, people have posted or written about
in the past.

...

MindVox will have a centralized news/events/information page online
within the next coupla days. It will contain all breaking information
in one central repository, and include further information regarding
how to donate using Paypal electronically.

Thanks for your attention to this matter, and please do what you can
to help. What's happening right now is going entirely to funding
Dana's defense, and doesn't even begin to touch all the cash that was
confiscated and quite likely gone up in flames.

Further information will be posted within the next few days.

Thank you,

Patrick,

oh behalf of MindVox/CNW.

Yes, that statement makes no sense. The Ibogaine clinics must be opened outside the US.
