In the Uk we have the afghani no.3 stuff.intended for smoking on foil but can be dissolved in H2O and citric acid to bang up,thats what was portrayed in the film.Its a brown powder that is diamorphine base of 30-50% purity(if your lucky!)

The extraction process can change qualities of the heroin. Possibly also the location it was grown. Purity is a big one. If it is really diluted it can seem weak, though if you are expecting a not so pure hit and its really pure you can OD like Rents does in the film.

well its a process of extracting the drug from the opium, swim would guess depending on the method used to process it into heroin so goes the color, as well as its form be it freebase or not.

Jerry Garcia only used smokable heron he called Persian Base. His description of it, as does Rock Scully's description of it in his book "Living With The Dead" sounds similar to black tar, but with a bit more consistency like opium. I just started a thread called "Persian Base" requesting information on it.

usually, the brown one is said to be low quality (cheaper one). The white one is said to be high quality (provided it isn't cut with some white stuff).
Now both are heroine.

this is true. Heroin is heroin, and it's all the same drug. It's just different looking depending on how much heroin's actually there. So the lower purities look like shit (black tar, brown), while the higher ones look much cleaner (pure white/offwhite rocks/powder).

There is black tar heroin, if I'm not mistaken this is only seen in North America and is mainly produced in mexico, this is acetylated opium, which means it still contains all the plants fats and fibers and all kinds of crap, it often still smells of acetic acid meaning it isn't even purified.
There are also heroin no. 3 and 4, heroin no. 3 is the freebase heroin which is meant to be smoked, it's just like crack which is the freebase of cocaine, and also meant to be smoked. Heroin no. 4 is heroin hcl, which is meant to be injected. Heroin no. 4 is a salt which is very water soluble so can be easily injected, but will partially decompose when smoked. Salts are almost always very soluble and easy to inject, while the freebases are volatile and easy to smoke, but practically unsoluble. That's why one needs to add a acid, for example citric acid, to turn heroin no. 3 into a water soluble salt so it can be injected.
