SWIM knows a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo by the name of Herpes, who is a chemist, can attempt to answer SWIY's question.

SWIM's plant has not yet developed to such a stage where these experiments can take place, so this is not through personal experience.

Herpes tells me that masticating with Salvia simply breaks down the leaf into smaller pieces. These pieces with Salvinorin A increase in surface area with each chew, along with an increase of saliva gives increased surface interface between blood vessels and the squamous epithelial cells, which allow the Salvinorin A chemical to traverse the liquid into the blood vessels around this area to a total surface area of 0.214m².
Smoking. Increasing the temperature of the plant matter to such a stage where combustion occurs, often coinciding with vaporisation of the active constituent which comes along in Salvinorin A. This mixture is then inhaled to the lungs and holding it in allows some Sal A to dissolve in 75m² of organ.
As SWIY might see, the surface area in the mouth is much more reduced than that of the lung also the squamous epithelial cells are stratified (more than 1 layer of cells) verses the 1µm single layer of the alveolar squamous epithelium.
Therefore more Salvinorin A enters the blood stream and faster with smoking/vaporisation than it does through the mouth, in which the introduction of Sal A entering the bloodstream is much reduced..
Lungs are good for quick and fast results, for teh win. Mouth is better for longer, more muted, experiences.

Is it possible to "Get there"? with Salvia? There are many threads on that subject visible in this forum. Herpes believes, however, that the sublingual (mouth) administration of Salvia allows for longer effects but intensity tends to be muted in comparison to the smoking alternative. Herpes'd say it is possible to have a "trip" but it appears to be more likely with smoking/vaporisation than with sublingual administration.

Sal A is not very soluble in water and so to make the dried leaf more palatable and for less requirement for Saliva to do the same SWIY can rehydrate the leaves before consuming.
Also SWIY did mention something about eating. The enzymes and environment in the stomach will metabolise or chemically alter the active constituent to something that is not biologically desirable (i.e. becomes useless for intended effects), it is probably a good idea to not eat it as it won't do anything for SWIY unless eaten in high quantities.
