Video RTE Primetime - War Without End (War On Drugs)

I know we have quite a few Irish members here so I thought I'd stick this up (it takes a global view of things though so something for everyone). Watched this last night on RTE, wasn't sure what to expect as Primetime can be pretty hit or miss in thier programmes but I was very impressed, definately worth watching, it examines the war on drugs, particuarly what it has(n't) accomplished since 1998 and the launch of the UN's Drug Free World in 10 years" campaign. Thought it would be of interest here.

Apparently it was an excellent documentary. I missed it, but will be catching up with it later.

Check out the quote from the TRANSFORM website that I have added as a comment on this documentary. Hats off to RTE for once. I wonder how many people watched this and actually took note?

Just watched it there, great find stiney. Im very surprised how well done it was, it actually gives a decent insight into the problem for those who dont understand the reality behind prohibition. And RTE prime time is a highly watched and respected show, common sense prevailed for once.

Thanks for the link. For a moment there I felt all kind of optimistic that decision makers and other 'influentials' would watch it and see the light. But then I reflected on the interview with the American drug tsar and realised that he absolutely knows the futility of the drug war and has no problem in propagating it. Here in Ireland we are in the process of developing our next national drug strategy and many of us are dreaming of a shift towards harm reduction. This documentary could be very useful in convincing people to change the paradigm.

It is absolutely unequivocal in demonstrating the futility and massive costs of fighting the war on drugs, as well as suggesting legal regulation as a viable alternative. A must see for anyone interested in this debate.

Prohibition's failure is now becoming widely acknowledged even among key stakeholders such as law enforcement and the politicians who have thus far been the primary beneficiaries of this ill-thought 'failed before' policy. the political benefits of pursuing prohibition are now rapidly waning and the political costs of its continuation are becoming unsustainable. The intellectual and political consensus supporting the ‘War on Drugs’ is crumbling rapidly, and calls for ‘more of the same’, or ever tougher enforcement responses, now no longer go unchallenged.

Well a few of the Primetime Investigates episodes get put up on youtube (and then usually taken down again) so maybe keep an eye out on there for it.
