Shroom hunting Need Help Identifying a Mushroom? READ THIS!

That magical time of year is creeping across the hemisphere leaving all manner of unidentifiable little brown mushrooms sprouting in it's rainy wake.
And, par for the course, we're starting to get our own drizzle of people asking questions about identifying their local little mushrooms.
Before you post pictures of your little nondescript specimens that look just like every other mushroom anyone is likely to see on a walk down the street--ranging from mind-fucking to deadly--let me stop you.

We cannot identify your mushrooms for you and anyone saying they can by a picture on the internet is either foolish or trying to kill you.

note that this is an informational introduction, merely to give a sense of what goes into identification, and is not meant as a definitive guide. To actually learn mushroom identification you will need to get some good books on the subject with color photographs, join your local mycology club to learn first-hand with experienced mycophiles, and spend some time out in the field. There is no other way.
