British police arrested scores of revellers and were forced to close six London Underground stations on Saturday night, after thousands of Londoners spent the night partying to mark the last day of drinking alcohol on the Tube, officials said.
There were chaotic scenes at London's Liverpool Street station with huge crowds of people enjoying cans and bottles of alcoholic refreshments.
Some sipped from cocktail glasses as others sprayed cans of beer into their mouths, with the evening kicking off in a celebratory fashion. But the mood soon soured.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said 17 people were arrested for offences such as assault, drunk and disorderly, assault on police, public order-related offences and drug offences. Four train drivers, three London Underground staff and two police officers were assaulted, according to officials.
The alcohol ban came into force from Sunday on the Tube, London buses, Docklands Light Railway and tram services across the capital banning people drinking from, and carrying, open containers of alcohol.
The move is aimed at making travelling on London's public transport network a safer and more pleasant experience. New London mayor Boris Johnson announced the measure earlier this month.
