Can someone please help to ID my cacti?
Many Years ago SWIM's parent's were given a cactus by a strange old friend of theirs.
Over about 15 years the plant grew much too large, and was cut down, chopped into manageable pieces and tossed into their back yard. In the last couple of years the pieces have grown many new cacti, and look similar to photos of San Pedro seen around the intenet. Can someone please help to ID them? Pictures can be seen here; http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa235/updagaryglitter/ The spikes are small and only slightly protrude out near the top, or where there is damage to the cacti. The large plant used to flower white, but these ones have not yet and no pictures are available of this. ANY information on type/content would be Greatly appreciated

Re: Can someone please help to ID my cacti?
SWINM would say that these are almost defenitely Trichocereus scopulicola, rather than T. pachanoi - really hard to tell apart, but when you have the two growing side by side, the T. scopulicola will grow at about half the rate of the T. pachanoi. The first few cacti that SWINM ever bought (from supermarkets and garden centres) was a T. scopulicola.
The spines of the specimens in your pictures also look shorter than T. pachanoi - but given that spine length can vary on cuttings taken from the same stock from 1mm to 10mm, that may not be a very good indicator. A bioassay may well be the best way to verify this .SWINM has read somewhere that T. scopulicola contains about 1/2 the mescaline concentration of T. pachanoi, but you'd have to test it out for yourself. But it looks as if there's no shortage of material for testing . . . . PCG IV added 12 Minutes and 1 Seconds later... also, pachanoi and scopulicoa flowers look pretty much identicle Last edited by PCG IV; 31-05-2008 at 11:59. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Re: Can someone please help to ID my cacti?
Yeah, looks good PCG IV,
I saw photo's of Trichocereus scopulicola and almost everything looks similar except for the spines. The only difference is that SWIM's spines are not as pronounced; or large. Does this cancel them out, or might they just be differen't because of environmental reasons eg climate or maybe even crossbreeding? Either way, thanks for the great advice. usersanchez added 95 Minutes and 0 Seconds later... Actually, I just looked again and found someother photos of Trichocereus scopulicola in Australia and they looked very similar! Hope you're right dude thanks. 2nd opinions anyone?? Re: Can someone please help to ID my cacti?
It should also be possible to pick up san pedro at market stalls - I remember seeing a guy pay just short of three figures for a pathetic specimen to a cactus and succulent seller at a well-known market in Melbourne about 6-7 years ago. it was about 80cm tall, and had at least 5 years growth on it - ridiculous when you consider that these babies will put on 50cm+ per year under good conditions. Good luck with any bioassaying that SWIY performs.

Not too good. 2ft fresh boiled down to very small amount using water only over a very long time (about 4 hours). Nothing felt.

Re: Can someone please help to ID my cacti?
Swim reckons that they are Cereus Peruvianus which unfortunately for swiy are not active. They are identified by their flat ribs, Trichocereus tends to have a fuller rib formation.

Re: Can someone please help to ID my cacti?
Please note Bezzz and Juxx, that the photos you viewed are of a different cactus. My mistake completely. I thought noone was seeing this post anymore so I changed the photos. The ones I put up now are Peruvianus, but the ones that were at that link WERE T.Scopulicola. Thanks for your input anyway guys.
Sorry PCGIV. Your advice was correct. I just forgot that I had posted photos on the same links. Probably made your advice look wrong. |
