replace it with something else

when swim was addicted to coke (2-3g binge every few days or so) he failed at quitting so many times. every time, the boredom would set in and swim would go back and binge for 12 hours. coke has no physical withdrawal, it's all psychological. and swim found it manifests itself as BOREDOM. the key that unlocks coke addiction is replacing it with something else. one has to pick an activity that he/she used to like a lot and start doing it with all spare time. this worked for swim. the removal of coke from someones life creates a vacuum that needs to be filled with something else. if the vacuum is not filled, coke will return. i hope this helps. swim quit 3 yrs ago and this worked for swim after many failed attempts.

Re: replace it with something else

Agreed.

Some people merely replace a coke habit with a different drug of equal abuse potential and it doesn't do much good in the long run.

Drug use stems as the OP said, from boredom, so getting out and doing something will take your mind off the drug alot. It is definately helping my friend right now as he is driving the clean road

Re: replace it with something else

NIK thinks "boredom" is a simple name for a complex bunch of shit thats going on in our heads at any given point in time.

It is the opposite of living in the moment; experiencing and enjoying where you are right now.

NIK think boredom comes from the discontent and disphoria of living in the past (resentments) and worrying about the future (projection and fear). Not being honest with yourself, trying to be someone you are not (a facade), and harboring secrets all contribute to this feeling of "wanting to do something else, be somewhere else or be someone else".

What do you think?

Re: replace it with something else

Fight Club,

I think thats a little too complex of an explanation for boredom..

I understand what you are saying but in this context I think boredom is just not doing anything, not having anything positive to do with your time.

When you have nothing to do, drugs typically seem like a good option

Re: replace it with something else

Junket,

But how does SWIY catagorize doing something, but wanting to do something else or being with someone, but wanting to be with someone else. All manifestations of "discontent" make NIK want to feel better, and the craving for drugs takes hold . . .
