Combinations - Sertraline/5-HTP & MDMA/Pills

Hi all,

SWIM has been taking 100mg of 5-HTP/day for about 3 weeks now for depression (the last one being 50mg this morning, and SWIM will take another 50mg in a few hours).

However, SWIM would also like to take either some MDMA or pills this friday and was wondering if SWIY might advise on the safety of this.

SWIM knows that many people pre-load with 5-HTP, yet has concerns regarding the safety of this and possible serotonin syndrome. SWIM will not take 5-HTP on Friday. But SWIM is also concerned that there might be a build-up of 5-HTP in SWIM's system, and is concerned that this might interact with the MDMA. Can SWIY shed any light on this?

Also, SWIM went to the docs today and has been prescribed sertraline. SWIM has taken fluoxetine in the past and mixed it with MDMA/Pills fine, however realises the chemical make-up of sertraline is different. Can SWIM take this new AD and still occassionally dabble (although SWIM probably ends up taking more MDMA in one session than did when previously on fluoxetine)? Again, anything SWIY can offer in advice would be greatly appreciated.

SSRI's attenuate the effects of MDMA, this is clear.

Particularly interesting is paper 2 above "SSRI's interact with MDMA at pharmacodynamic (serotonin transporter) and pharmacokinetic (CYP2D6 metabolism) levels. Marked decrease in the effects of MDMA could lead users to take higher doses of MDMA and to produce potential life-threatening toxic effects"

Adding 5htp seems like a recipe for disaster (serotonin syndrome) here.

SWIM hasn't started taking the sertraline yet - wants to be sure all 5-HTP is out of system before begins with prescription drugs. Thanks for pointing to the atricles, SWIM will definitely be very aware of this if/when taking MDMA in the future.

With regards to this weekend, SWIM only has 5-HTP in system and has read it has very short half life (ie 100mg supposedly all used up within 6 hours), but realises research is inconclusive. This half life stands at odds with many users' experiences of 5-HTP's effects building up over a few weeks, suggesting it might stay in the body for longer.

Do any SWIYs have any personal experience of taking 5-HTP daily as an alternative anti-depressant and 'sensible' amounts of MDMA?

well since ecstasy causes one to use up all their seritonin, swim is pretty sure it would help before, during, and afterward.

swim take a 5htp before during and after to "increase" the duration of swims experience.

Most cases report 5HTP is most effect post MDMA use to get back to baseline, avoid depression which strangely occurs 2-3 days later, and give a nice afterglow to the entire experience.

The amount taken won't have a strong bearing on the experience, almost no likelihood of serotonin syndrome. (pardon my crude paraphrasing) In the Ecstasy/MDMA section there is a trip report of a user who underwent high doses (think grams) of 5HTP per day in attempt to alleviate MDMA tolerance and no serotonin syndrome symptoms were reported.

sertraline and fluoxetine both greatly diminish the effects of MDMA. If SWIY has yet to begin the sertraline treatment now would be a better time than later to dabble with mdma.

With regards to sertraline/MDMA, swim's thinking now it's probably best to avoid. Interestingly, swim didn't notice any greatly diminished effects before when combining fluoxetine/MDMA - perhaps suggesting the fluoxetine wasn't doing the job it was meant to. Maybe an inadvertant experiment into the placebo effect!

fluoxetine takes a long time to build up a substantial quantity, as much as a month, so it's possible that the SSRI hadn't fully built up in SWIY's blood supply before SWIY enjoyed MDMA. Or placebo, tell your friend to have a good time.
