Boat carrying three tons of cocaine captured
5/19/2008

The Naval Force of the Nicaraguan Army struck another blow to international drug trafficking, upon capturing, in an antidrug operation carried out Sunday night, a 42 foot long "cigarrette" boat equipped with four 240 HP motors, that carried 113 sacks of cocaine weighing 25 kilograms each, reported Róger González, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff of the Naval Force.

González indicated that the drug traffickers abandoned the ship in front of the lagoon of Bismuna, 43 miles to the north of Puerto Cabezas, in the Autonomous Region of the Northern Atlantic (RAAN).

"The sacks were transferred to Puerto Cabezas and delivered to the District attorney's Office. These bags of drugs can hold 20 to 26 packages of around a kilogram each", said González.

He indicated that the capture is part of a plan against drug trafficking called Sovereignty, which in addition to counteracting drug trafficking carries out activities against all illicit sea activities, piracy, contraband, and human trafficking.

He said that the boat also held 400 gallons of fuel, and an amount of money in dollars that was not revealed. The narcotraffickers abandoned the boat at seven in the evening in front of Bismuna when they were accosted by an aircraft from the gringo frigate that patrols the Caribbean waters.

"They (the drug-traffickers) are fleeing on foot in the area, we are tracking them, although they could have fled toward Honduran territory. We presume that are Colombians", said González.

According to senior agent Roberto González, Chief of the Police of Bilwi, tests were carried out yesterday morning to determine the exact weight of the drugs, which was measured at 3,172.22 kilograms. The Public Ministry participated in the tests, as well as specialists from the Directorate of Special Operations of the National Police (DOEP).

As part of the followup to the operation, the Army of Nicaragua is maintaining naval and terrestrial patrols to see if they can find the occupants of the boat.

The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff of the Army in the RAAN, lieutenant colonel Samuel Pérez, along with the leader of the Puerto Cabezas Police, senior agent Roberto González, have petitioned the Public Ministry and the judge of Bilwi for the immediate incineration of the drug, because of the danger posed by keeping it in custody.

Additionally, the Bilwi Police do not rule out the presence of criminal groups linked to the drug trafficking that could try to recover the seized drugs.

Atrapan lancha con 3 toneladas de coca
19/05/2008
