Bitterness Indicative of Mescaline Content?

This last week swim bought a 4'3" long cactus that he thought was peruvian torch. At the time of purchase it definitely looked like it, especially compared to the other cacti at the store. When he got home to be sure he cut a little chunk off and touched it to his tongue- and it was very bitter. From what swim understands the bitterness is the alkaloids so this made him very happy. His plan was to do an alcohol extraction on it so he could trip at the end of the week and then have some left over that would be easy to store(and hide). He decided that he wanted to trip that night or the next so he used the top 9" of it to make a tea, he only used 9" cause the thing had at least a 5" in diameter. That night swim and a friend shared the tea that had been brewing all day and it was quite bitter, just like the first time he made San Pedro tea. Unlike that time however nothing happened. Then yesterday he tried the tar he got form the alcohol extraction of the left over 3 and a half feet and again nothing.

Swim is confused because he had always heard that the bitterness was from the good stuff and this last time it was still bitter, but nothing happened. Some ideas he has had are that maybe it wasnt a trichocereus at all and it could have very well been rich in alkaloids, it just didnt have any mescaline.

Or maybe it was a Peruvian and had alkaloids but was extremely low in mescaline. He's thinking this could be the case because the cactus's ribs(star points) were pretty flat and it was very wet when cut indicating it had plenty of water in it and thus wasnt too stressed out. Also, the night he and his friend drank the tea and nothing happened they did 450mg of DXM each. About two hours after taking it(and feeling nothing strangely) they went to bed at approx 3am. Swim woke up at about 5:30am feeling the DXM pretty strong. When he was fully awake and it was bright outside he stared at his ceiling and had some pretty amazing opened and closed eye visuals, but they were nothing like he had ever had on DXM. He's thinking maybe the DXM could have intesified (or been intensified by) small amounts of mescaline
