A Piece of Cake: A Memoir
A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown (A Memoir) tells the harrowing story of a happy well adjusted 11 year old girl who, after her mother suddenly passes away, is thrown into a world that most of us could not even imagine.
The foster homes she is put into are all abusive; she is raped, beaten, starved and repeatedly told she is a whore and a worthless person who no one could ever love and who will never amount to anything.
She runs away and spends the majority of the next 3-4 years living on the street for as long as she can and only returns to the foster homes when she is forced to by police. She tells anyone who will listen about the abuse but no one believes her so she learns things are easier if you just keep your mouth shut.
While on the streets she is constantly high or drunk on whatever is going, whatever is free or whatever is cheapest. At first this is usually alcohol, marijuana, PCP, LSD and barbiturates. Later she becomes a daily user of methamphetamine and crack cocaine.
She hitchhikes around the country turning tricks to support her drug use until she finds her way into the Gansta Crips; one of the most notorious gangs in LA.
After leaving them she descends into the deepest realm of addiction, where everything in her life revolves around drugs and she lives like this for many years until it all becomes too much and she begins to make plans to die. But instead, in a moment of clarity, she reaches out for help and begins a journey of recovery.
Cupcake’s very personal and candid story is touching and inspirational as she triumphs against all odds in this beautifully written memoir.
