Question Magnesium for clenching

One of swim's friends said that he heard that taking Magnesium supplements can help relieve the clenching caused when rolling. swim clenches a LOT when he rolls (probably also because he has a clenching problem while sleeping as it is without ecstasy), and wanted to know if anyone knows about this, whether swiy has heard of it or tried it and has feedback. Thanks!

Re: Magnesium for clenching

Clenching is all part of the MD experience!

It hasn't been a proper night if SWIM doesn't start the next day with jaw paralysis.

But yar if you're on the pull or at a place where not everyone else is rolling it can be a bit of a bummer!

Trust me, swim agrees with you, but swim chipped his teeth a bit last time, and his jaw is already fucked up so he needs to stop the clenching.

thank you ravehippie, you seem to always be the most knowledgeable!

Re: Magnesium for clenching

Magnesium supplements have been known to reduce clenching altogether with my friends. They recommended to take one supplement about an hour or so before dropping. I can't remember what the dosage was in the pill.

Re: Magnesium for clenching

It seems to work well. My buddy Eddie takes 500mg calcium and 500mg magnesium before taking any drugs which cause bruxism.

The reason it works has to do with blocking ion channels, a topic I am not qualified to explain.

i was always under the impression that calcium if anything would be worse for clenching because the Ca2+ ion is involved in muscle contraction and as far as i knew Mg2+ ion works to relax muscle by blocking calcium. i could be wrong.

I've read conflicting information both ways over the years - a bit of googling found some interesting results. Eddie's initial good results were obtained with tablets combining both, so he stuck with it.

Re: Magnesium for clenching

Mag supplementation is an absolute must, I have never had an issue with dosing upwards of 3-5g in a night. Whenever you find yourself clenching, pop a 500mg and you're good in no time

Re: Magnesium for clenching

SwiM thinks that swiY should try perhaps taking a multivitamin supplement for a few days before and after a roll - to build up any supplements that may get used up during the roll.

As far as the clenching itself during the roll, swiY could try such things but swiM thinks that it can be avoided -- go buy a pacifier, or get some (long-lasting) gum, or learn to stick swiY's tongue between her teeth while rolling. SwiM bets there are tooth protectors as well - little gel-like imprints of teeth to keep swiY from biting down, etc.

So what if swiY has a pacifier in her mouth. Anybody with her would probably think it's cool anyways .

ahaha its nothing to do with emberassment for swim, in fact swim has never rolled without a pacifier, and usually has 2 because he is notorious for destroying them before the rave is usually even over! swim takes multivitamin already, but it doesnt contain a large amount of magnesium, so he will go out to get pure Mg supplements. thanks for all the help swiy's!

Re: Magnesium for clenching

SWIM knows for a fact that magnesium eliminates the lockjaw.. it really works wonders.. SWIY should take 500mg of magnesium about 30 minutes before the X and SWIY should be fine!

Re: Magnesium for clenching

From attackpandas experience preloading magnesium eliminates his jaw clenching and cotton mouth. 500mg to 750mg.

make sure your attackboar doesn't have a sensitive stomach. else you might want to add some imodium (for diarrhea) to that shopping list.

Where do you get magnesium supplements? Just general health stores?

Yea, supermarkets should have them too. Pretty much anywhere that sells multivitamins should also stock magnesium. SWIM finds magnesium helps alot with his jaw clenching. SWIM would also recommend to take some more before you go to sleep. SWIM use to always wake up with jaw pain and teeth that felt like razorblades when he ran his tongue across them. Since using magnesium supplements, this has never occured again. SWIM takes 1 gram before his roll and a gram before he go to sleep. If you have a weak stomach be prepared for abit of an upset stomach.

Re: Magnesium for clenching

SWIM grinds his teeth in his sleep as it is. Rolling vastly exacerbates matters, but SWIM does have a mouth guard which helps. However, this is not a desirable look in clubs, and it doesn't stop SWIM from chewing his cheeks either.

SWIM wishes to reduce clenching/grinding as much as possible.

An hour before rolling, SWIM intends to take 1000mg Calcium & 500mg Magnesium (they are combined in one pill). SWIM is curious, would it be best to have the Magnesium by itself? Someone suggested a dose of 500-750mg - is the dosage affected by the presence of Calcium?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Magnesium for clenching

Swim is happy to find this out, swim was always terrified of destroying his teeth if he took MDMA, he took it once, and is hoping to again after his uni exams. He's heard stories about cheek chewing, apparently someone in his area chewed through their cheek, swim doesn't know if there's any truth behind this story though.

This sounds like an urban legend or gross exaggeration to SWIM. While within the realms of possibility, SWIM imagines if it were true, it's likely that more than MDMA was involved. SWIY will notice when you start to chew your cheeks. Chewing gum helps a lot, but SWIY should keep in mind not to chew too manically.

Re: Magnesium for clenching

There are two types of magnesium. Elemental Magnesium and Magnesium Citrate. One of these is useful for clenching whilst the other isn't as useful. I can't remember which is which though, Google knows, though!

Re: Magnesium for clenching

I fail to see how a magnesium supplement could decrease bruxia....... it's involved as an ion in neural channels... not as a neural agonist or antagonist. Just because it's there doesn't mean it'll prevent any undesirable side-effects caused by MDMA use (there needs to be something to trigger its release). Serotonergic agonism is serotonergic agonism...... only antagonism at the same receptors or GABA activity could reduce this.

It's a natural part of recreational dose MDMA. Is there any litterature to supplement this magnesium theory? I'm not discrediting it.... but it sounds bizarre to me and I want to see proof.
