Getting PainKillers for Migraines

Alright SWIM has some really really bad Migraines and SWIM would like to be prescribed Oxy's for his migraines because when SWIM has his Migraines he's in so much pain that he would almost take his life away...

SWIM has never taken any Opiates except for some Percocet when he broke his clavicle.

SWIM knows percocet are not powerful enough for his migraines so SWIM thinks Oxycodone would be better (so he heard).

If not SWIM wonders if there is any Nasal Spray pain killer for really fast relief or anything similar.
He also would like to know if anyone has experience with Oxy's for the pain related to migraines.

Thank You!

Re: Getting PainKillers for Migraines

Hey SunnyHours. Let's get started in explaining this to you. First off, Percocet is Oxycodone, so that's what you were taking. Oxycodone is very strong, and would definitely help your migraines. Most of the time, Opiates aren't prescribed for Migraines, unless they are to the point where they are intolerable. If this is the case, you would have to either go to an Emergency Room or a Doctor so you could receive a CAT Scan (CT) so that the Doctors could check to see exactly what the underlying problem is.

Perhaps you mean you Oxycontin, which is a time-released Oxycodone that comes in greater strength than Percocet. If you were receiving 5 mg or 10 mg Percocets, these would greatly help your Migraine pain, but you need to get checked out before receiving any opiates. If there is a major problem with your head, you will be discharged with medication.

Hope everything works out for you,

Regards.

Re: Getting PainKillers for Migraines

SWIM knows percocet is Oxycodone. He also knows that Oxycodone comes in higher dosage.
SWIM's mom also had terrible migraines and she was prescribed Demerol I think.
Thanks.

Re: Getting PainKillers for Migraines

Right. I have been prescribed Dilauded for a Migraine, but I received a CAT Scan. In order for a Doctor to put a patient on a strong pain killer, they must find the underlying cause. Opiates mask the pain, if the pain is gone, the Doctors cannot find the problem, and if the problem is potentially life-threatening, that is not good. So, once everything is solved, you will get your pain killers. Just go to an ER.

Regards.

Re: Getting PainKillers for Migraines

Bongo had terrible migraines also. He saw specialists up the wazoo. CAT scans confirmed. As did family history - they are genetic. And Bongo landed in his share of emergency-rooms for a spike of Demerol or similar. But once he found a doctor who would prescribe the hairy ape - Bongo - Tylenol 3's, as long as Bongo took them as soon as he registered the migraine approaching, Bongo had no more problems. It worked.

Getting a doctor to prescribe OxyContin for a migraine may well prove impossible. Not until every other tool in the shed has been tried. Do get a full neurological workup done for SWIM. And hunt for a specialist in pain management. A couple of Tylenol 3's should nip the migraine in the bud - if one takes it early.

Oh, and migraines do go away with age. Bongo got over his at 25. His dad had them to 35.

Re: Getting PainKillers for Migraines

Well I suppose it depends where you live, because where I live the ER gives the required medication, depending on the pain factor, ranging from 1-10, 1 being the most tolerable, and 10 being the worst. OxyContin is a very strong medication, but I could see one being discharged with Percocet.

As for a Pain Management Doctor, I go to one every two weeks, so I know what they are like. They prescribe pain meds, that's their job. If it gets to the point where the pain is chronic, than you will need to go to a Pain Management Center.

Regards.
