Dealing with ecstasy in Mobile County
Quote:
Report by Derica Williams, WALA
Photojournalist, Riccardo Montgomery
MOBILE, Ala. -- There's a demand in Mobile County that the Sheriff's Office is trying to stomp out. Sheriff Sam Cochran said, "We believe this may be the largest recovery locally of ecstasy. Now ecstasy is commonly sold in the night club scene."
Officials are taking it out of the party scene and off the streets. Investigators say they seized 4,700 ecstasy pills, 1 and 1/2 kilos of cocaine and 3 large guns from the home of 26-year-old Thanh Nguyen. His neighbors say they've been suspicious.
Gaye Crowe said, "We've been alarmed about the situation over there, we noticed a lot of people in and out and a lot of cars and activity going on." Some folks are glad to see Nguyen arrested, because what police say they found inside his home could affect the entire community. Danny
Budd added, "They target the young people with ecstasy. It's the feel good drug and kids are dying from it everyday." Budd is a supervisor at Mission of Hope. He's also a recovering addict and knows firsthand about the destruction ecstasy can cause.
"It's a bad drug to be tangled up in. There are all types of things mixed up in that and there are lasting mental affects," said Budd. Budd believes education is key and it's important young people know about the harmful effects so they don't get involved.
Budd said, "The cost of drug addiction to the public is extreme. When you look at crime and auto accidents and spousal abuse, it's a wide ranging problem." Budd said ecstasy and similar drugs can only lead to death or imprisonment.
It's a problem the both the Sheriff's Office and the mission of hope will continue to fight. Budd said, "Every time they take a large quantity of drugs off the streets, there are untold lives that are impacted by that." This arrest and seizure means countless lives are saved.

Largest Seizure Of Ecstasy Pills In Mobile Co. History
By Jamie Burch
Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran calls it a history making bust.
Friday night, members of the narcotics and vice unit raided a home on Savannah Drive in West Mobile. They seized over 4,700 Ecstasy pills,1 1/2 kilos of cocaine, a machine-gun and two military assault rifles. The drugs alone are worth $250,000.
The raid was the culmination of an 18-month long undercover investigation into 26-year-old Than Nguyen. “This is one drug dealer we’ve had a close eye on for some time," said Sheriff Sam Cochran.
Less than 45 minutes after the raid, deputies arrested Nguyen at a pool hall on Airport Boulevard and seized his 1999 Acura Integra.
Back at Nguyen's home, deputies also seized seven plasma tv's and three surround sound systems, worth $17,000. They believe the electronics were bought with drug money.
Nguyen is charged with trafficking cocaine and trafficking a controlled substance. He was released after posting $10,000 bond.
