Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

SWIM recently broke his hand, 7 days ago to be exact, and was initially prescribed oxycodone 5/325's which he took as prescribed, and only for pain, but still finished them in 5 days. The doctor, upon second meeting and new cast, prescribed SWIM hydrocodone 10/325's with 50 pills and 1 refill. SWIM is still only taking them as prescribed and only for pain, he doesn't take more than 3 of the 10 mg one's in a day. He also wouldn't take more than 6-8 of the 5 mg pills, but he made sure to stay at safe levels of APAP always.

His question is at what point, if not already, will he need to be wary of withdrawals? Are these doseages, only taken for pain, for about a month by the end of everything be enough to cause any?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

well ,if at all, it would be like a cold flu for a few days, nothing to worry about.. dont overdo on the APAP (cwe? but that would lead to abuse, so not recommended) one should be more worried about the psychological feeling, if he has the feeling he gets to like the stuff a lil too much and makes excuses for taking it, he should stop immediatly in SWIM point of view. even a little pain for some time is nothing compared to a strong addiction in the longterm.

but still keep sure to make it all as short as possible and only take if REALLY necessary

Re: Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

Feels a bit heavy to me to prescribe oxycodone for a broken arm, especially for so long time period. Anyone else feel that way?

Edit: Nevermind, I guess it's a general practice then. Just struck to me as strange.

Re: Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

Yeah, SWIM only takes it for pain, no extras, 2 knock him on his ass anyway.

And he doesn't know how commonly it's prescribed for a broken hand, but the pain was/is severe and the pills actually help, he actually kind of prefers the 5 mg as they relieve the pain while leaving him functional, the 10 mg's just send him to his bed.

Re: Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

SWIM went through this exact withdrawal, 3 10's of hydro per day (less sometimes) every day for a month or so. He said the withdrawal symptoms will be minor aches and pains (discomforts you normally wouldn't notice), restlessness, possibly hostility and depression. SWIY also has to remember that during this time his body has stopped producing its own pleasure hormones because of the drug does it for him. After the physical withdrawal, there will be anxiety and he should expect to feel kind of "low" for a few weeks until his pleasure receptors start firing again.

As for those physical side effects:

SWIY will definitely experience a little diarrhea, definitely cold chills/hot flashes and occasional sweating. SWIM also experienced erratic, nonsensical trains of thought and sometimes even what could best be described as "visuals." DO NOT let a few days' cold be an excuse to keep using! Nip it in the bud!

SWIY should probably try to procure some pot as it helps all aspects of the withdrawal. No other narcotics, unless SWIY can get the doctor to prescribe them a week's worth of valium so he won't be so restless and anxious. Valium is also similar in its action on the brain to opiates and it will relieve some of the physical withdrawal, but stay cautious! No more than a week's worth, don't just switch addictions!

SWIM would opt for pot and lots of Benadryl and Immodium.

Hope that helps!

Visuals? I've gone through withdrawals from years of uninterrupted opiate use and have never experienced "visuals". Do you mean visuals like hallucinations.

Re: Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

No just subtle disturbances in the visual field. And also the feeling that things "aren't real." SWIM said they got worse when he went through an oxycodone withdrawal once. After using 30 mg a day, for someone with low tolerance, for a month he kicked it and experienced sweating, delirium, and fits of rage. SWIM may be pre-dispositioned to such things.

Re: Will SWIM need to worry about withdrawals?

i don't think that your w.d.'s will be too severe, you have pain to medicate so the meds are being used for the right reasons, and your body will realize that. now your time-frame is a bit stretched out so you might experience some undesirable feelings, but after about a week or so it wont be so bad. SWIM also recommends tapering your dose down as you reach the end. from 30mg's a day, to 25 for about 2 days, then to 20 for maybe three days, then to 10 for 4 days, then 5 for 5 days, then 2.5 for about a week, then see how you feel. i know that is a long taper but you know it's better than just going cold turkey, and your body will slowly become self-sufficient

hope this helped.
