Want more pods in tea, but there isn't room in the french press
Swim wants more pods to use in his poppy tea (about 20 large), but his french press runs out of room at about 15. THis being said, assuming swim would drink 4 cups total, which would be better.
Prepare two batches of 10 poppy pods in a french press? or One batch of 20 in french press. Swim believes that one batch of of 20 will be better since there will be more alkaloids in each press, but hopes otherwise. thanks |

Re: Want more pods in tea, but there isn't room in the french press
Extraction in a french press won't be very thorough because it won't stay hot long enough due to there being no heat source. For a thorough extraction of the alkaloids, keep the CPS hot for between one and three hours, depending on the temperature. After which point, it can be filtered in the french press, muslin or a tea towel.

Re: Want more pods in tea, but there isn't room in the french press
Wow, three hours!! I've heard some people using hear for 30 minutes, but three hours seems excessive to swim. Swim has come to believe that it is hardly the amount of time or heat the gets the alkaloids out, but rather just the pressure of the french press. This is somewhat similar to normal tea.
If you had tea boiling, it wouldn't make much difference whether it boiled for three hours 5 minutes if you squeeze all the "tea's vitamins/enzymes/vitamins/anticortisol...etc at the end" Please correct swim if he is wrong and to what extent (as in percentage of alkaloids are lost if possible.) |

Re: Want more pods in tea, but there isn't room in the french press
Poppies can't really be compared to tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) in terms of extraction time. The desirable compounds in tea leaves are highly water soluble and extract quickly. The desirable compounds in poppies are alkaloids that aren't highly soluble in water and do not extract so quickly. Further more, many of the alkaloids are damaged at or above 80C. For this reason most people choose to extract at 70C or below. If you've ever brewed tea leaves at this temperature, you'll know that it takes longer for all of the desirable compounds to extract than if the water was at or near boiling. An hour at 70C will extract most of the alkaloids from poppies but maybe not all of them. If the temp is 50-60C then atleast 2 hours would be recommended.
