Drug info - Resin Question

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the paraphenalia or cannabis section, so I'm going with both.
As much as SWIM hates to admit it, occasional he does run out of proper drugs and needs to catch a buzz. So, like many of us, SWIM will smoke the resin that collects in his pipes. He knows smoking tar is gross, but something occured to him. First of all, what exactly is resin? Would it be possible to separate the THC from the tar through some extraction method?

Also, something else occurred to me. How is it that smoking resin could be any worse than smoking cannabis? Granted, the THC content is (usually) lower and therefor, gram for gram, more has to be smoked to obtain the same effect. Still, as far as SWIM understands, resin is smoke that has stuck to the walls of a smoking piece, so wouldn't it have been inhaled anyway? I don't see how being stuck to the pipe for any amount of time could have made it more toxic.

You could soak in ISO and filter the crap outta it but there will always be gross stuff in there thats bad for you and very very little goodies, I save my roaches in the freezer for when I run low, and have a lot of legal herbs around.

^^^because there are more contaminants in the cannabis resin!!!!this question has been answered many times on here and some of the answers go into great depth and science...swim advises retrying the search engine and reading through the posts.
