19 year old girl died after takin half pill

Swim just wants to report a deeply sad event - that makes he thinks - happened in a club in Bergamo (1h from Milan) last saturday:
A 19yo girl died after takin half pill sold as ecstasy. She had never done any drugs in her entire life, was really healty and athletic (she practiced skiing at high levels, races, etc.).
Last saturday some friends convinced her to go to this club, where they also persuaded her (seems she didnt want to) to try a pill.
She started to feel not well around 3 a.m. so she asked her friends to drive her home. In the morning her conditions got much worse: her parents took her to the hospital, when they arrived she fell into a irreversible coma and died after 2 days of agony from a "irreversible cerebral lesion".
In her blood were found substances leading to amphetamines.
She took half pill: the other half of the same pill was taken by a friend of hers who didnt report any kind of sickness or bad feelings.
This tearful dead has been all over the news (in Italy) for the last week and since swim himself occasionally likes(loves) to roll now and then he wonders: what the fuck is he swallowing? can anyone who takes a pill know every single fuckin substance that there is inside?
That poor girl might not (it's still unknown) have died directly from the amphetamines (most of the media just called it "ecstasy", just some wrote it was "amphetamine", its not clear it they generalized and didnt call it mdma) but from some other substance lethal for her organism.
Although unlikely, couldn't this happen to ANYbody?

Which is why MDMA should be legalised as soon as possible. Drug users are fed up being treated as seedy, second class citizens who have to put up with guessing what they're putting into their bodies. It's a form of governmental blackmail. "Don't take drugs because we've handed the regulation of them to mob rule".

What interests Swim with this story is that the other half didn't kill the other girl. Swim can therefore only relate her death to her having an allergic reaction to whatever the pill contained (probably a normal, popular occuring substance).

Unfortunately not all of us can take ecstasy and be alright. Some people are allergic to it. And in this extreme case, the poor girl died from her reaction.

But, as Swim said, since the other half didn't kill the other girl then there is Swiy're conclusion...

She most likely re acts negatively to amphetamines or was allergic to something? Maybe heart complications. SWIM does not know why she died, but deaths occur from many things everyday, we cannot ban everything. Can we?

I'm very sorry for this girl and her family period.

Blaming ecstasy though, is ridiculous. For what I read they (the press) are only "assuming" she died because of an irreversible cerebral lesion caused by ecstasy (as she took ecstasy.

My italian sucks but can I ask if doctors actually said that? Is the media given their sources or they are just "assuming"??

What kind of neurotoxin can cause irreversible brain damage and why it affected only her?
I understand if you overdose on MDMA you are more likely to die of overheating (hypertermia) or heart attack so, what's this poison? It doesn't make much sense to me.

The only chemical I can think of that could kill someone and that is occasionally misrepresented as MDMA is PMA. PMA is para-MethoxyAmphetamine. This nasty stuff can easily, with just a little too much, cause a person's biological thermometer in the brain to increase the core temperature. Up as high as 108F. If memory serves me well.

But there are holes in this news story one could drive a truck through sideways. Without a full toxics-screen and medical autopsy (unlike the autopsy done by some reporter), we will likely never know a definitive answer.

My condolences to the family. But let's not be too quick to bury MDMA along with the young lady.

i don't see how it is possible for half a pill of any drug to cause a brain lesion...

she may have had the condition already, and the raised blood pressure might have been the straw that broke te camel's back

If one half of the pill caused a fatal reaction in one person and t he other half didn't in another person it seems the only explanation is an allegic reaction to some substance in the pill.

Personally swim knows a guy who cannot try any XTC pill (or any other) because of a serious(!!) acetylsalicylic(sp?) allergy.
Should swim's buddy drop one and die of anaphylaxis due to aspirin allergy it would be reported as XTC fatality while in fact under a well regulated drugs policy it would (correctly) be attributed to a reaction to an adulterant and the manufacturer would get theirs.

Swim's buddy firmly believes the leaders of society today are intentionally a danger to his (and others') well being.

Sounds like she had a brain aneurysm secondary to increased blood pressure from the amphetamine. Probably unrelated to the roll, but bad publicity for it.

Haha, Swibf has to laugh at the fact that a product of prohibition can be effectively presented to the populous as a justification for increased prohibition. If he doesn't laugh his head will explode.

as for the issue, swim thinks that what this girls took was likely not ecstasy, or had poor heart and curculatory health to begin with before taking the pill.

If she was on MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) of any sort then I guess it's possible that it could have been a fatal combination of the two things, cos I know taking MAOIs and ecstasy is extremely dangerous because it inhibits the enzymes that break MDMA down so the drug can escalate to dangerous levels in the blood. Having said that, half a pill seems like a small amount for someone to die from even if she was on MAOIs.

This makes Swim sad. The ecstasy trade is in a bad way, and the only way of half-standardising the content of what you're eating is to buy pure. Even then, there could be something else in it.

The possible causes of death could be argued all night. Though I have read a few articles relating to a DNA strand that is lacking in some people which makes them more prone to death whilst on E. Where as people with the correct strand don't have many issues.

Though it isn't proven and I can't be bothered looking them up again, though search Google and you should find something relating to it.
