Question Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

How fast does one form a tolerance to opiates, hydro in this case? Days? Swim has noticed that after a couple of times of dosing, he needs to take more to get the same effects. 4 then 5 and so on.

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

Although people say it usually takes longer, I feel if you take the same dose say 2 days in a row, the 3rd time usually it takes alittle bit more. Just because you have some tolerance doesnt mean youre physically dependent. It takes about 2 weeks to form some physical dependence.

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

Swim has always used a 'three day rule' when it comes to taking any opiates and certainly hydro inparticular. After three days of taking the same amount you will have developed a solid tolerance to which you will need to take more to achieve the same affect. However, Swim must be careful, for this usually coincides a physical dependance of some sort. Of course, its different for everyone but for Swim if he were to go 'cold turkey' after taking a progressively higher amount everyday for a week or more he would suffer some type of withdrawl symptoms

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

I was thinking exactly the same thing as stated above. Having used it for years, swim aint no rookie to opiates. But he was just wondering about the exact number of days that it takes for one to develope a tolerance for the drug. Withdrawal does suck and swim is going through one right now, but thankfully its almost over. Unfortunatley, he always has to go cold turkey because he uses his hydro until there are none left and dosent think of saving some to taper off of it in the end. Thanks for the informative responses.

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

I can't remember where I found it but there was a study that showed how tolerance is also related to the daily frequency of use.

The report (which was speaking of morphine in general) mentioned that a second dose, taken within fours hours after the first dose, will create "tolerance".

So in order to reduce constantly increasing dosage, it was recommended to wait as long as possible before re-dosing. I know someone who has used opiates (20 mg of oxycodone) regularly/daily for 2 years and has not required any dose escalation.

The "secret" : Waiting a full 24 hours (or more) before redosing.

Of course in constant or reoccurring pain situations this isn't possible. But, if you ever run into someone who uses their medicine in a manner inconsistent with the labeling, this might be useful information to them.

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

If it's for swims recreational use then what most of the others have said would be correct, however if it's taken for the manner in which it was prescribed then there are cases of people that take (let's say 2 10/325mg for arguements sake) for a year before it no longer a high enough dose to do what it was intended to do. I know of one fellow that takes 2 of them every 4 hours like clockwork, and at the one year point he stops taking them all together for about 2 to 4 weeks. Then he starts all over again at the original dose without ill effect.

Cool Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

Tolerance is relative.
SWIM is able to take a normal handful of hydrocodone(20-25 Pills<10/650>) and it hits SWIM the same even after taking a week, month, or years off as it were. SWIM could be considered a junkie, and definitely does not recommend ever takin that dose due to the damage done by that lovely tylenol. Took YEARS to take that amount, was stupid to do, but now nothing much less does much for a great time.
BUT taking half as much with oxycodone leads to ringing in SWIM's ears, and headaches.

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

Usually physical tolerance is dose related, as well.

Re: Come-up of tolerance to vicodin?

Tolerance, in most cases, shouldnt develop in someone taking them for pain as directed by a doc. Atleast thats what most pain specialist and papers i've read have said.
