Dichloroacetate; cheap effective anti cancer drug?

I've been hearing quite a bit about this lately, usually in anti-Big Pharm rants.
Apparently dichloroacetate has been proven to effectively kill most types of cancers. This chemical has never been approved for therapeutic use and has stayed almost completely under the radar. Of course, dichloroacetate is cheap and unpatentable, so no company would have any desire to get it approved.
I would like to know if anyone else has heard about this chemical, and what your thoughts are.

Re: Dichloroacetate; cheap effective anti cancer drug?

The same claims have been given to "vitamin b17" aka laetrile, complete with the "there's no money to be made so evidence is squashed argument"

here's news from wikipedia "On 24th September 2007, the Department of Medicine of Alberta University reported that after the trial funding was secured, both the Alberta local ethics committee and Health Canada approved the first DCA Clinical Trial in Cancer. This initial trial will be relatively small (enrollment- up to 50 patients in the following 18 months). The patients will originate from the Edmonton area and be available for scheduled assessments for the duration of the trial."
