Nicotine as a nootropic?

Hi all!

Swim was wondering if anyone's had any positive or negative experiences with using nicotine as a nootropic. Swim's seen it mentioned in a few places that nicotine can improve cognitive ability, but all that google searches tend to produce are pages upon pages warning against the dangers of smoking, whereas she's interested in using the gum or patches as a source.

Possible addiction isn't that much of an issue for Swim, she's only looking to take it for a couple of months anyway. It is, however, pricy, so she's hoping to find out if anyone's found it useful before buying.

For a litttle extra information, she's currently taking Choline Bitrate along with low doses of caffeine and is waiting for a delivery of Oxicetram. She should be taking fluoxetine, but has given up on that for a bit.

Anyhow, thanks for reading. Swim would be grateful to receive any information!

I would suggest avoiding it as there are many other compounds for cognition available that work far better.

Why would swiy want to try a drug that so many people spend ages trying to get off. Just for a couple of months then have to go through it themselves like swineuro said there are much better alternetives out there.

Very well said. Perhaps Galantamine it also stimulates the nicotine receptors in the brain without being addictive.

Yeah, a bit of dopaimen is always helpful though it was usd in acient times against parasites and mould infections. It also stimualtes a bitthe HPG axis -> more sex steroids. which also help with your cognitive functionioning. But the effects are more secondary ones and the primary not very long lasting.

Re: Nicotine as a nootropic?

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but it seems there's no actual info in here, and since I'm revising, here's what I know:

  • Acetyl Choline is involved with learning, memory and attention
    • Muscarinic antagonists inhibit acquisition and retention of learning in the Morris Water Maze learning paradigm
  • Nicotine improves learning and memory performance
    • Alpha7 NAChRs are permeable to calcium and slow to desensitise
    • --> Alpha7 NAChRs in the ventral tegmental area can induce synaptic plasticity, a requirement for memory
  • Nicotine can also reverse deficits in cognitive performance induced by lesions to the septum or basal forebrain
It seems that an appropriate dose of nicotine (esp. in someone that didn't smoke) might be quite effecacious.
