Trends Gunman Steals OxyContin From Pharmacy

GARDNER, Kan. -- A man robbed a Gardner pharmacy at gunpoint Thursday, but he wasn't looking for cash.
The gunman walked into the pharmacy, went behind the counter and demanded narcotics.
"He said, 'Get down,' and he had a gun, so we got down," pharmacist Jana Meyer told KMBC's Chris Nagus.

Meyer said the robber made a vague request.
"'I want drugs.' He didn't specify which kind. I said, 'Which kind?' He said, 'Narcotics,'" Meyer said.
Then he got more specific.
"OxyContin, he wanted OxyContin," Meyer said. "He was very calm, and he spoke very softly. It wasn't like he was out of control, and he said he didn't want to hurt anyone."
"We gave him what he wanted and he got out and there was nobody hurt, and that's the most important thing," pharmacy owner Sam Boyajian said.
Police said the robber was a white man and about 5 feet 6 inches tall. Witnesses said the gunman wore a camouflage coat, a ski mask and gloves.

A Habit-Forming Drug

OxyContin is a prescription pain reliever that some people use to get high, pharmacists said.
"It goes for $30 a tablet to over $55 for one tablet. You multiply for what it's worth on the street, and you can see there's a huge economic impact to getting ahold of this drug," pharmacist Howard Stark said.
Doctors said OxyContin may be habit forming and should be used only by the person for whom it was prescribed.

what I dont understand about the pharmacy robberies, is why not just hold up the delivery man? they have a shit load of drugs and no cameras.

Major source of diversion is often left behind the scenes. Local drugstores are targeted on a regular basic around these parts, no money just Sch. II narcotics and ADD meds.

Well people are going to do stupid things and get addicted anyways but many other problems could be solved if things like oxycontin were much more accessible.It might even deter young people from trying opiates because it would seem more like a medicine like aspirin as opposed to something cool and rebellious.It would also make swims life much better

IMO swim can't see narcotics like morphine and oxycodone becoming otc, at least not in his lifetime. Swim thinks that would be nice and convenient but can't see anything like that happening with narcotics.

This is a little offtopic but swim doesn't see the difference between taking an opiate for emotional or physical pain as compared to taking an aspirin for physical pain or an anti depressant for emotional.That must be one of the reasons opiates are so controlled.They effectively fix so many symptoms and the pharmaceutical industry wouldn't make any money with all these new anti depressants and mood stabillizers.

As expensive as prescription meds can be swim wouldn't be suprised if this man just simply couldn't afford it rather then being a drug dealer or addict himself lol. Seems like pharmacy robberies are becoming more common lately , swim hears of them a lot more frequently in his area seems like.

And how many of those deaths were caused by mixing oxycontin with benzodiazepines or alcohol?If someones for legallization than one should be for the legallization of everything.Why should the people that enjoy marijuana get to have fun but not swim?Yes it is addictive but so is alcohol and tobacco.

Lots of robberies like this here in the Dallas, Texas area.. Plenty of OxyContin, Fentanyl patches, Hydromorphone, Morphine, etc stolen from 24-hour pharmacies. Last week some dude drove his car through the front of a small local drugstore. His take? 200 Hydrocodone 5/500's. Hardly worth it.

Bottom line? Legalize it. It won't happen, but its a nice thought. Luckily SWIM can get what he needs from various overseas sources (plz, no pms on the topic)

ISwim'sHO he thinks that there is a much better argument for the legalization of marijuana then there is for oxycodone or any other narcotic/opiate. Don't get swim wrong, he loves opiates with all his heart (has some bupe in him now, ) but he sees some major arguments for keeping them under their current scheduling and not legalizing. Such as the deaths each year, the high abuse rate, the addictiveness, etc. Making them legal would just give more access to them which would probably lead to even more deaths and abuse. This is all just swim's two cents though.

I think legallization would reduce deaths and abuse.It would most likely reduce younger people getting involved with them.Kids that are just into cannabis wouldn't be exposed to them on the blackmarket anymore.It would seriously reduce crime.Addicts wouldn't be forced into a life of crime anymore.Thats the problem with this society.The people that are for prohibition are the priveliged,the ones that have everything.They don't understand pain and why some people need opiates just to be able to deal with day to day existence.

I thought I'd be all for legalization for every substance, but I'm not 100% sure on that anymore. If oxy was legal there might not be much harm done on individual level since it's not toxic and if there were plenty of users the prices wouldn't be too high. But if there was plenty of very cheap oxy then the question wouldn't be should I use it, but rather why shouldn't I. Drugs have an effect on a cultural level if used a lot, and we wouldn't need more self-centeredness and carelessness in this society. Suppose nearly everyone used it, it could be quite a blow for the economy and society. It's all cool with me, there are other ways to live, there are people in amazonian rain forests living 24/7 for gods sake. Many people wouldn't still be willing to see this change if it were to happen, it's all my fiction ofcourse. But think about it. Cheap oxy, makes you feel like billion dollars, doesn't kill you in the long run, why not.

One thing we all agree however is that it should be legal for everyone who needs it. Including addicts, ofcourse, and maybe a lot wider array of people with variety of problems in their life. As long as there would be another person who'd need to "prescribe" it to keep things in perspective, i.e. not allowing a person to buy it everyday from a coin-machine and develop a personality of a perfect asshole.

In general legalization doesn't add the use, but keep in mind that synthetic drugs, which are very different story from natural ones, haven't been around longer than from the 19th century. When discovered, they were hailed as miracles but soon there were really serious problems with morphine, cocaine and heroine. But at that time there was no mass-media to inform people about the dangers of those drugs. So I'm not sure if we really know what would happen if these extremely strong drugs would be all over.

But maybe we should just find out and not try to resist the direction of events. Let the darwin eat the ones who can't resist the urge or develop problems with these substances. Then, in a few thousand (or million) years there will be a human race that can handle these powerfull things.

Just some food for thought.
