Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

Has anyone heard of silence as a side effect of cocaine use? I know it usually increases energy and makes one more talkative, but one of my friends goes completely silent. Within the first hour, he usually stops talking for the most part and after prolonged use, will only sparingly nod when spoken too. All he wants to do is sit in front of the computer playing the same game all night. Is this normal? Anyone have any explanation for this? His reaction is the exact opposite of everything I've found.

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

I have a friend who smokes crack sometimes and it makes him talk less because it makes his voice very hoarse. But if your friend is enjoying it and choses to talk less then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Have you asked him afterwards why he goes silent?

Oh, and welcome to the DF

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

Sometimes SWIF goes quiet, it's because he feels like he's on top of the world and noone else is really worth talking to. Like it's a waste of time, he'd rather just sit there and survay the scene and just take in the moment. This is only with very high doses mind you. On a side note SWIF really isnt that up himself when not on cola

SWIM was always the same way. His mind was completely blown and he couldn't really do anything at all. But that's the way he liked it.

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

A possible behavioral explanation would be that he has been fooled on the neurological level to believe that using the computer/playing the computer game predicts a reward, due to the rush of dopamine while he's playing his game.

When the brain first experiences a reward, it release a burst of dopamine (and endorphins), but as it learns to predict the reward, it releases the burst of dopamine when it thinks the reward is coming, but not when it is actually recieved -- that is, dopamine is used to drive us to seek out the reward. So perhaps when your friend experiences the rush of dopamine, he seeks out the mis-perceived reward of the computer game?

I know this is an old post but I just read it. Excellent reasoning and most likely correct given dopamine's involvement....

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

Of all the people SWIM has known that partook in such activities, two would go silent on occasion. One would be dead-silent as long as they were under it's effects, though they had a few underlying mental conditions, bi-polar disorder (untreated) if I recall correctly. Not saying that had anything to do with it, just mentioning it. The other was, what the Joker would call, a schemer. He would be silent for a fairly long time, then suddenly say something like 'You know, if I had a huge laser, I could hold the world hostage. I would also have a small army of my own, all with smaller lasers' and then proceed with a long, detailed explanation of how he could defeat any countermeasure mounted against him in order to ultimately gain control of the world.

Much like other substances, SWIM personally believes that the reaction to it can be determined by the person taking it, almost as much as what was taken. This belief stems from SWIM knowing people who were given great energy by marijuana, made very hungry by opiates, and made sleepy by amphetamines.

That guy sounds JUST like a commie. Cocaine and Speed both seem this way, ISO. Swim used to want to be the best. But yea, bad thoughs. ISO, can perhaps cause a strong addiction, until one gets over "themselves". Swim learned the hard way.

Swim usually goes silent and enjoys the euphoria/positive feelings in peace. Too often conversing becomes obnoxious to Swim.

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

goodgirl;

some swims suffer from paranoia when under the influence of cocaine. even the slightest case of this feeling can turn expected talkative, socially active swims into quiet folk. or maybe this swim just really likes his video games? yea!

SWIM will shut up, almost completely, when coming down. Or, under the influence of a cocaine high administered through IV.

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

It is possible that SWIY is not taking cocaine at all. The whole of Europe is awash with shit (or non cocaine). SWIM went to Ibiza last year and the coccaine there was awfull. Turned SWIM anti-social and unable to talk no, euphoria whatsoever. Just stomach cramps awfull awfull! SWIMS night out were ruined because of this. Eventually, SWIM reluctantly switch to pills and had a smashing time. Everything was crystal clear and joyous! SWIm only hates the come down from pills and tends to avoid if possible.

In most part of the UK unless SWIY has good connections then SWIY will be getting the same ol shit. Seems like any dickhead will sell any powder thats white.

Awfull. SWIM has stopped using Coke because it's terrible....

Re: Silence as a side effect of cocaine use?

SWIM thinks that administration route plays a big part; before he started slamming he would be very social and conversational, after shooting coke everything changed, snorting was never enough to feel high and slamming would blown him away and make him unable to speak or think for that matter however SWIM doesn’t regret losing the talk, talk and more talk aspect of cocaine because he traded it for some of the most extreme sensations that can be experienced, both good and bad, although he often would like to have phobia of needles.

When NIK used coke, he would engage in compulsive behavior; video games, watching porn, masturbation, etc. He would also become both paranoid and reckless at the same time. NIK liked to wander around in public places and watch people for entertainment, but he didn't want anyone to talk to him!
