SWIM wants to know what to say to Dr.

SWIM has migraines about once a month and Darvocet doesn't take care of it. Vicodin will help but doesn't like Vicodin too much.

However, SWIM took 10mg of Oxycontin once and it was the next best thing to a shot of Demerol.

The Doctors don't ever want to prescribe SWIM Darvocet let alone Vicodin. So how does SWIM get Oxy from a doctor? SWIM already knows telling them about migraines will only cause them to want to give a preventative, which doesn't work and Zomig and Migranol makes SWIMs heart palpitate. This scares her.

SWIM would really just LOVE to take Oxy once or twice a month to rid herself of the migraine and feel a nice wonderful buzz to make up for that awful pain she had to endure.

What "type" of doctor gives this medication and what would SWIM say to get it. These are SWIMs medical problems:

SWIM was in a car accident and had a fractured skull with brain hemorrhage, ruptured spleen, and pancreas. Broken hip and shoulder. Ruptured ear drum, and now has sever back and neck pain so SWIM feels that she DESERVES a nice buzz and a break from some pain. eh!

SWIM believes the doctors think she is a drug seeker because she got caught going to hospitals getting Demerol after she was discharged from ICU. But that was over 12 years ago. Can a SWIM get some oxy please?

Re: SWIM wants to know what to say to Dr.

SWIM thinks SWIY should be honest with their Dr., and themselves. Pain treatment is a very touch subject. A Dr. doesn't want to leave their patient in pain, but would prefer they not make them junkies either. A SWIMMER would like to not be in pain at all, but is that really best for what they need? In general the minimum is given because of problems with dependence.

Being honest with SWIYourself for proper pain management means asking "does this drug bring my pain to a manageable level". If SWIY honestly answers yes, then SWIY is looking for non-theraputic dosages and probably should not need a higher dosage, regardless if SWIM "likes it" or not. If the answer is no, then SWIY must explain that to the doctor. If the doctor negects this, SWIY should talk to other doctors or groups focused around pain prevention. SWIM doesn't know of any off the top of his head, but he knows they exist. A legitimate case where preventatives cause sickness, and lower strength drugs are not effective, warrants stronger drugs.

It's not one's intention to offend, but the fact that SWIY feels they deserve this, has a therapy that they just don't like that much, has been caught going to hospitals before, and is looking for the buzz are signs that they should probably stick with what they have, or similar strengths to avoid dependence. It doesn't seem like much now, but it is a very slippery slope.

Sorry to hear about SWIY's accidents, sincerely hope SWIY gets the pain management they need!

The truth is that SWIM only wants 5 pills a month for pain but does enjoy the buzz. I do think there is an issue with dependancy, however pain is very hard to deal with at times.

Are SWIYou seeing a pain specialist, normal family dr, or neurologist? There are a few things to remember when trying to acheive a life with out pain. First you must find the right Dr. Im not talking about Dr shopping im talking about finding a specialist. If your Dr is not willing to help you live a life without pain get a referal. If you are worried that your current Dr has or will label you as a seeker go to your local public health care facility (free clinic) and find a Dr who knows nothing about you or your previous history. Be sure to express how much your life has been impacted by your pain, and be willing to run the gambit of tests as well as the pharmacological gambit. DO NOT tell the Dr what "works" for you unless you are asked even then only talk about things you have been legaly prescribed in the past. DO NOT insist on an opiate therapy as this will raise all the wrong flags. DO tell him/her about your accident and again express how much your pain effects your life cry if you have to just get the point accrossed. If the medicine they prescribe doesnt work TELL THEM! and be sure to mention experienceing known side effects (requires a little research) eventually you will either A) get on the opiate therapy you are after or B) get a referal to a pain specialist. Either way you CAN AND WILL get what your after. It just takes persistance and patience. I know those are quite hard to come by when you are living a life of pain. it took me 12 years of tests surgeries and running the pharmicalogical gambit to FINALY get on an opiate therapy regimine. Now my life is liveable and my pain is managed. Oh yeah and BTW dont EVER go back to any pharmacy that has labled you as a seeker. THEY DONT FORGET! Trust me! Good luck and God bless.

Re: SWIM wants to know what to say to Dr.

Swim knows how miserable migraines are and feels for swijudgejudy. As it's been said before honesty with the doctor is the best policy.Work with the doctor until swiy finds something effective and if not find another doctor.Nothing wrong with a second opinion.Ofcourse don't do this too much, don't want to look like swiy is doctor shopping.

Re: SWIM wants to know what to say to Dr.

SWIMs doctor (UK) wouldn't prescribe any codeine products as they claimed they could accelerate migraines. SWIM got sumatriptan instead (also called imagran) which deals with migraines wonderfully... minus the buzz though!

If SWIY is looking for migraine help then Imagran is best... if its for the buzz, and you reckon dependance may be high, SWIMs advice is to leave it, as SWIM is on a min of 20-30 x dihydrocodeine tabs a day and really wish they could remember what it's like to be off them.

Hope this helps

Re: SWIM wants to know what to say to Dr.

Actually, it would be way more dangerous for SWIY if she went to a lot of hospital pretending to be in pain...that would get SWIY cought in no time.
But if SWIY is just visiting doctors then it shouldn't be a problem. If SWIY likes the buzz, then I guess SWIY could complain from her hip pain and explain to the doctor everything about the accident ( which by the way will serve as a huge excuse for SWIY....) and the doctor will probably give SWIY some Oxy.
