Re: about me

Regarding six cans of strong cider, that's what, about 4 units a can for a total of about 24 units a day? That's certainly well above the recommended maximum.

Regarding AA, I've heard mixed views. Some people find it very helpful; others find some parts (esp. the "god" bit and the "once an alkie, always an alkie" bit) of the 12-step program is not right for them. There's at least one thread about this in the addiction forum.

Re: about me

Indeed, if swiy is worried about hir alcohol consumption and feels unable to stop, it is likely s/he has a problem.

There are certainly both physical and mental aspects to alcohol addiction, and while they certainly overlap, swiy first needs to decide that s/he wants to quit or cut back, and then take the steps to do that. If swiy has been drinking daily for some time, they may want to consider talking to a doctor and/or detoxing in a medical facility if finances/insurance allow.

Also, swim would recommend trying out some meetings, including AA, outpatient/group therapy, and/or secular recovery type meetings- the most important thing is to have support, what exact type is a matter of what swiy finds most helpful- recovery is simply a process, a matter of trial and error and finding what works. It is a process of re-evaluating one's life and re-discovering one's approach to it, a process that is both internal and very personal, and also one that involves the people around swiy and the forming of supportive and positive relationships.

Feel free to ask for help, and keep us updated on how swiy is doing, and definitely look into seeking medical advice and/or group meetings for support.

Re: about me

I am agnostic, but for me it was God which gave me the strength and will to overcome my deterministic spiral out of control. Very powerful, now I understand a bit about why AA can be so powerful..
I am still agnostic but by giving myself to a higher power, by being humble, by recognizing myself and pleasures as not the center of everything - but rather as sin thatwould lead me to my own hell - and working on this relationship - my whole life has changed.
Everything is beautiful, I have been finding the will to do things which I would have given up on. And I am more at peace.

Also mindfullness meditation and loving/kindness meditation just once a day for 20 minutes can have a drastic impact and can bring many benefits described above.
But for me i only changed truly, began doing mediation and such, after I had a powerful experience giving myself up to god.

Re: about me- drink alcohol daily

Best of luck. My buddy Eddie is in the same club, maybe you know him?

I don't think it's terribly hard to stop at that level of usage. However, it sure can be hard to truly desire to enough to do so.
