Need advice with marijuana use charge

SWIM would greatly appreciate advice from people who have knowledge with this charge.
SWIM and his friends have been given a ticket for Marijuana Use (not possesion). SWIM has court coming up and has heard many stories from people that have had similar charges. SWIM has a lawyer who says he should plead HYTA (holmes youthful trainee act) which will put SWIM on probabtion along with paying the required fines. SWIM has no prior record of any kind, and has heard stories of people who have been caught using marijuana and only were required to pay a fine (no probation). SWIM's parents however don't care about a fine they just want SWIM to not have a record (use is a misdomeanor). SWIM knows that if he pleads HYTA he will be put on probation for 1-3 years and pay the required fines. But he is concerned with the fact that since other people have had this charge before and have said they were only fined, no probation, SWIM worries that by pleading HYTA will severely increase his punishment.
If anyone knows someone that has had this charge before and can give information on what the penalties recieved were it would be GREATLY appreciated.
