are the brain zaps and SSRI withdrawal dangerous?

swim is getting off of his zoloft. he has been on it for about 2 and a half years now on 50mg. yesterday he was told by his psychiatrist to move down to 25mg.

swim being the worrier that he is, researched the withdrawals and heard that the brain zaps have been linked to brain damage? he also fears having a psychotic reaction or violent mood swings. he has also heard of people experiencing dizzy spells and brain shocks for years after quitting. he also doesnt want to experience delerium or anything damaging.

needless to say swim is extremely pissed off. and also nervous of what is to come and long term damage. are these anti SSRI people going abit overboard and exaggerating the withdrawals because they are pissed about there experiences and its there way of getting back at the drug companies? or is it actualy as serious as people say it is. its like there are two extremes out there and swim doesnt know what to beleive. the drug companie are saying its safe( but obviousely you cant trust them) and the other side you have anti SSRI warriors preaching the dangers of SSRI's

NOTE: swim tried using the search engine but couldnt find anything about SSRI withdrawals being dangerous and didnt find anything answering my specific questions. only how to taper off and symptoms of withdrawal.
