Re: Passion flower ?
SWIY should be able to check out common herb books for all the info. One should find out if their plant is a variety suitable for medicinal use before injesting. A common nursery-bought plant may or may not be the type used in herbal remedies.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) also called maypop parts used: flowers, leaves, roots, stems Has gentle sedative effect and helps lower blood pressure. Helpful for anxiety, hyperactivity, insomnia, neuritis, & stress-related disorders. Passionflower is a safe plant from which passionfruit comes from. (certain varieties) One could take the proper parts of the plant and make an extract/tincture: Tinctures may be made by combining four ounces of a powdered or cut herb (finely chopped up) with one pint of alcohol such as brandy, gin, rum or vodka. The tincture is shaken daily which allows the herbs to extract for about two weeks. The herbs are then left to settle and the tincture is then poured off. It is normally strained through cheese cloth. One could perhaps take a ml of the extract and gradually increase until the desired dose is acheived. |

Re: Passion flower ?
Yes one could use the process for about anything that is water soluable - or has water soluable substance(s) one wishes to extract. (meaning it only takes water to pull the substance out of the herb/plant...)
To make a concentrated whole herb extract, one could make a tea from desired leaves. Tea may need to brew for under an hour, or more, it just depends. If the strained out herb is rebrewed and you get tea, ad to rest. If it there is little to no color, it's all leached out. Strain well and put back on heat until liquid has evaporated down to a smaller, desirable amount. (can take several hours) Put in bottles with alcohol. The stronger the alcohol, the less one needs to use - so for small bottles, 100% grain alc.or 90%+ vodka, like everclear is best. An extract of 40% or 4 parts alcohol to 60% or 6 parts herb extract is good and strong. *To be safe and avoid possibly degrading herb, keep heat thru entire process low - no simmer, just a some steam rising. Use enough water to work with, but not so much that one will be evaporating for days. One day is long enuf!

Re: Passion flower ?
I forgot to mention this simple procedure works for water soluable substances. So I edited that in. SWIM beleives she read the chemical in Salvia is not water soluable, but it is not too difficult an extraction process.
This is prob in other ethno threads. If SWIM remembers where she saw the info, she'll post it. SWIM is making an extract right now. She wants to make glycerine based extracts next. Alchyhol kinda burns under swims tongue, when using extracts sublingually. Here's some Salvia info:http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2358 Last edited by e-spacecadet; 28-03-2008 at 20:57. |

Re: Passion flower ?
danger of passiflora: the plant contains some cyanogenic glycosides, I do not know if these are present in big enough quantity to cause serious problems from moderate amount of plant material but I think one should be careful about ingesting huge amount of passiflora
...maybe drying, boiling/heating the plant material to 100°C could get rid of these? (I don't know anything about cyanoglycosides reaction to loss of water and heat) Last edited by genaro; 03-04-2008 at 23:10. |

Re: Passion flower ?
Passion flower. Wow.This stuff made me feel calm and relaxed, but in a state of mind that was very open to new ideas and thoughts - so much that it scared me. I didn't really care for it much. It's on my list of things I'd rather not try twice... |

Re: Passion flower ?
sounds like swiy got a bad trip off passionflower...swiy could be the first in history....swim hisself got hold of capsules of 300 mg of the above-ground part, standarised to 2% vitexine [passiflora incarnata] . dosage for sleep is at dinnertime 2x n before sleep 2x. swim popped a few times some ten caps before sleep -> def buzzy for swim. not that many new thoughts as of yet....wouldnt mind em he thinks.....those were SCARY new thoughts or overwhelmingly positive ?????
