Re: I made this pipe and vaporizer
Did your friend ever test these smoking devices? I would be interested in hearing what the effect of such thick glass was on the heating process, especially in retaining a prolonged temperature.

Re: I made this pipe and vaporizer
SWIM would caution against using this device for vaporizing unless the jar is made from Pyrex or similar. Light bulb glass is very thin so transfers heat regularly and well, light-bulbs also get extremely hot without any damage. Regular glass jars on the other hand are quite thick and at the most would be intended to withstand boiling or steam cleaning.
SWIM once owned a blue-flame lighter which the advertising for bragged that its flame could melt glass, so SWIM tried it on a glass coffee jar (very stupidly on SWIMs bed) ...well the glass got red hot but didn't melt, or at least before it could melt *POP* extremely hot glass fired about SWIMs bedroom scorching straight through cotton bed linen and luckily leaving SWIM unharmed (but luck was all it was) SWIM does not know whether if only a normal lighter was used the jar would not have exploded, but in memory of his incident preaches caution! Re: I made this pipe and vaporizer
Thank you very much for the caution. Hopefully all who read this thread will take away the warning that the heating of thick, untreated glass that is not designed to withstand high temperatures (i.e. pyrex, Erlenmeyer flasks...etc) can heat to extreme temperatures at which it acquires stress fractures and can eventually shatter, projecting red-hot glass about its surroundings.

Re: My friend made this pipe and vaporizer
yeah, the glass worked... but was too thick and was a real hassle to use. the pipe was noob but it was cool considering the tools i was using to make it.
Dont use a glass jar for a vaporizer |

Re: My friend made this pipe and vaporizer
SWIM is trying to build a vaporizer based this idea. In her case she is using a 40W bulb in a lava lamp to heat the bottom of a glass jar (much smaller than angryteabag's friend's jar, like a small vinegar jar), whilst using a dimmer switch to control the temperature. She is then going to suspend some tobacco in a small metal pouch inside of this glass jar, so that the air flows through and vaporizes the tobacco at a temperature of 185C to 210C. Now she wants to know whether steel wires used to suspend this metal pouch (a tea strainer or thimble) will give off any toxic vapors at this temperature. She will also be heating a non-toxic vinyl tube she bought at the hardware store inside of this glass jar, but it will be heated only by the air inside and will not be in direct contact with any glass surfaces. Any advice for her would be greatly appreciated.
