Hydrocodone and insomnia?

SWIM always thought pain killers like hydrocodone and oxycodone knocked SWIM out but last night they took 40mg of norco orally and then could not fall asleep all night. Finally at 6:30 am they fell asleep. All night they laid in bed calm but couldnt fall asleep and every time they looked at the clock it was another hour later...Any one know of anyone with similar side effect?

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

Hows swiyour tolerence? Is swiy taking them everyday? Cause Swim notices if he takes Norcos before bed he cant sleep. While they used to have the opposite effect on him. I think its because he has been taking them for so long. When swim stops taking Hydrocodone for a couple weeks or atleast a couple days then he starts taking them again they knock him out.

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

SWIM notices the same thing as his tolerance builds up. In some people it can have a paradox effect such as insomnia and even hyperactivity.

An example would be this girl SWIM once knew.
At first when she had opiates they would knock her out but after a while when her tolerance built up she would get restless and even agitated instead. Usually as soon as the opiates started to kick in she would go on a cleaning frenzy all throughout the house and anyone whom viewed her would swear she was on speed and not opiates.

SWIM has also often experienced "half sleep" when tolerance has begun to build in his system. A state of not being asleep but not really being awake either . . . hard to explain . . . SWIM is conscious of his sleeping if that somehow makes sense.

Hope this has been of help

kaczynski is a decent SWIMmer.
Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

SWIM has the exact same experience every time he uses hydrocodone, even at high doses. SWIM doesn't know anything about the science of opiates, but every time SWIM uses hydrocodone and goes to bed, he drifts through the night in a drowsy, pleasant but still conscious state. In fact, in alot of instances SWIM was never able to fall asleep at all. SWIM doesn't mind "sleeping" on hydrocodone, but has been surprised by his seemingly illogical inability to sleep while in such a relaxed, drugged state.

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

NIK (no-one I know ) would take hydrocodone in the morning and be amped all day. I know it's not amphetamine but for NIk it does have that effect on him.

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

All drugs can have a paradoxical effect. Studies have shown that a fair number of dexamphetamine patients for add/adhd seem to "calm down" and concentrate rather than be hyped up like it does for other people (recreational users).

SWIM has a sister whom is prescribed this medication, before hand she was hyper and very bitchy etc. Now she is quiet and calm and very good at problem solving.

One thinks that this medication for add/adhd (have not researched it so this is just conjecture) may be reliant on this paradoxical effect. The paradoxical effect of this particular drug may be a standard effect in people afflicted with add/adhd.

The same goes for just about any drug, including opiates, that there will always be a percentage of paradoxical effect which can change with tolerance to the drug.

Just an opinion

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

I think i know what you guys are talking about when you say you experience the half asleep half awake state it happens to swim usually when his tolerence is low but only when he nods of sitting half way up. Like his head and neck are at a 45 degree angle. He also experiences loud noices when this happens like a yell or boom thats not real but it jars swim awake. Swim has one friend who experiences this too and we both think it is caused by fentanyl more so then anyother opiate. Anyone know about the loud noise thing i described.

CandiGirl is learning how to SWIM.
Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

SWIM has never taken Hydrocodone, but has taken many many opiates/opiods over the years..... And has always found that she cannot sleep/doesn't feel sleepy when she has taken them....

Obviously sometimes a little gouch is experienced... but sleep seems a waste when feeling so good!

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

SWIM has had this experience many times, especially with high doses of hydrocodone within 4-6 hours of bed time. If he does that, SWIM will spend the entire night awake with an odd sedated but stimulated insomnia. SWIM actually enjoys this effect, though he imagines others might not.

Re: Hydrocodone and insomnia?

SWIMs pet chinchilla (Chin chin) gets the insomnia effect quite badly and hates to attempt to sleep on hydrocodone. When planning an evening she allways makes sure she takes it at least 9 hours before bedtime. The effect is even worse for Tremadol, but the Chin chin finds this has other unpleasent effects (e.g. anxiety) so avoids this one.
Chin chin stangely also gets the cleaning bug on hydrocondone, usually she is a very messy creature so it is an additional perk!
