$1.35m Lotto win for alleged drug boss

Alleged heroin kingpin strikes it lucky- Wins $1.35m while under investigation by police
- Affidavit reveals the Lotto win
AN ALLEGED drug kingpin in Brisbane won $1.35 million in Lotto while at the centre of a major police investigation.
Khanh Nhat Bui's lucky break came as state and federal police closed in on him for allegedly running an international heroin trafficking syndicate from Inala in the western suburbs.
A former associate of the syndicate, who cannot be named, revealed the Lotto win in an affidavit obtained by The Sunday Mail.
"Everyone in the community knows that Ca (Bui's nickname) won the Lotto. Ca told me that he won $1.35 million," the affidavit says.
Bui is known as Ca, which means "tomato", from his time working on a tomato farm.
But authorities say he is no simple farmer.
Queensland police, Australian Federal Police, the Customs Service and Australian Crime Commission targeted Bui and his family and associates in a long-running investigation, codenamed Operation Darsham.
Police raids on the family's properties in 2005 netted $350,000 in cash, which was seized under proceeds-of-crime laws.
It was alleged the money was buried under a chicken pen and that the group had stashes of heroin hidden around Brisbane.
Investigations continued after the raids and Bui was charged in December last year with heroin trafficking. He is yet to face a magistrates court committal hearing.
Legal sources confirmed Bui won Lotto's first division prize in 2006 - right in the middle of the police investigation.
The windfall came a year after raids on his family's properties, and more than a year before he would be charged with trafficking.
Police allege Bui brought in blocks of heroin from Vietnam and distributed it to a network of dealers.
