Question GHB and Betablockers(atenolol)

Heya! Ive used the search-engine and havent been able to find this discussed before. SWIM is suffering from slightly elevated Bloodpressure but medicate with a Beta-blocker called Atenolol to keep it in normal levels.

Does anyone have experience on the effects of GHB and combination of this medication? Or what are your thoughts of it... SWIM just told me he ordered 1.5l of GBL to convert to GHB so he'd be real sad if he wasnt able to use it at all... But better safe than sorry.

Sincerely, Kummin

Re: GHB and Betablockers(atenolol)

Well as far as I can find there are a few reports from patients being treated with Xyrem who are also on beta-blockers. It appears that some do have problems with the combination slowing their heart rate more than they are comfortable with when they are sleeping and complain about waking up feeling sluggish with a low recorded HR.

But bear in mind that they are taking pharmaceutical doses (4g+) which is much more than rec users take in a single dose.

It would be advisable for SWIY to start out with some small doses and for him to monitor his sleeping - if he wakes up the next day feeling that he has been sleeping too deeply or if it feels like there is a problem, then he will have to face facts and be sensible.

Re: GHB and Betablockers(atenolol)

A popular drug interactions checker lists the combination as being safe.

Everything MrG says above is certainly good advise though. Incl. when he notes Xyrem users use a far higher than (normal) recreational dose and therefore being more likely to cause complications when combined with beta-blockers.
