Now cannabis is going to be downgraded to class C, are there going to be idealistic (or capitalistic) daredevils, who open coffeeshops? I have little doubt that there are but who and where? Let us know where the UK cannabis smokers can go. |

When cannabis was finally reclassified earlier this year, the tariff(maximum sentence) for intent to supply a class C drug was raised to 14 years, making it unlikely that anyone will be able to successfully set up a coffee shop on the Dutch model in the foreseeable future.
One way round it may be to run a 'bring your own' policy, with the equivalent of a 'corking' fee - many restaurants without a licence to sell alcohol will allow you to bring in your own booze, unopened, and charge a nominal fee to allow you to drink it on the premises after opening it for you. Not sure if anyones tried this in the U.K. yet, or even if it'd be a viable loophole, but may be worth looking into... |

well they say that what your postcode is depends how harsh they'll treat you if you get caught growing buds.so maybe that would shed a bit of light on where is best to start a coffeshop.dont know what codes are ment to best and worst tho, then again could just be yet another drug law myth...

The bring your own weed policy has worked in Canada but only on the west coast in Vancouver and I believe only a few have ever been sucessful. But it seems viable.

Brixton in Lodon would probably be the best place to open a shop

I know of several cafes that *have* opened, but it is still illegal to do so and they do get shut down and the owners arrested.

Dragging this up. It's tolerated in my local snooker hall, it's dark
and dingey and clouds of smoke. About 20% of the people there actually go to play snooker lol. |

I've read about a few that have opened over here but theyve all been shut down almost immediately.I don;'t think the government would allow it because although they've lowered the class of cannabis they definately dont want to be seen as promoting its use.

I think Cornwall would be a good site to open one. Plenty of hippies and mysticism to back it up. They'd flock in their hundreds. They're probably a little more relaxed about it out there too.
I'd like to suggest to someone to start selling weed in an ice-cream van like set-up. Who knows how long you could get away with it in the countryside. |

only realistic places i can think of are really rough areas, where police srongly dislike going. or a gypsy camp, basically anywhere with the least trouble with police.
Maybe somewhere quiet like whitby, if it wasn't heavily advertized |

there used to be 2 in bournemouth. one got shut down so the owner just moved. the 2nd location was next to swim's local and swim went there everyday without being hassled by pigs. cos it was an unofficial squat, the "owner" was kicked out of there too. wasnt any real hassle about the legal status (this was before the re-classification) as dope wasnt officially sold on the premises.

The first coffeeshop to open in the UK, at least publicly, was "the Dutch experience" in Stockport, near Manchester. It was open for over a year i think, constant battles and protests with the local police. It's well documented on the net... It was part owned by a Dutch guy called Nol van Shaik, who owns the "Willie wortels" coffeeshops in Haarlem, Holland. The unlucky one was Colin Davies, who got sent to jail... The coffeeshop stayed open though! It spawned the Dutch experience in Bournmouth too, but non of them are open any more as far as i know. The only other publicly open coffeeshop i know of is "The Beggars belief" in Rhyl, North wales. Been raided, arrested etc etc... Still open though, i'm sure. It's a growshop/headshop, with a members only room out the back. There was a TV programme on the BBC a while ago about it... |
