Alcohol-Related Liver Damage?
My lizard had been a periodic binge drinker since about the age of 13 or so. Generally, he was able to forestall dependency, until last year, when he suffered withdrawls after coming off of a 6-month peroid of near-daily use. At the time, a liver function test was run and elevated enzymes (ALT) were noted, although his doctor did not believe any permanent damage had been done.
He then experienced three DXM trips, which lessened his desire for alcohol considerably. His use has been stable for months at 5-6 drinks, 2X/week (around 10-15% of previous).
Recently, however, he's been hit by "hangovers" (i.e. mental fatigue and confusion) after consuming more than a trivial amount of alcohol the night before. Until most recently, food and caffeine would alleviate them, so lizard saw them more in the context of "caffeine WDs" than hangovers.
Last night, however, lizard elects to celebrate beating the flu by having 1 pitcher (3-ish L) beer. Awakening to the same "hangover," he tries the food and caffeine cure, only to find the mental confusion worsened! He's spent the entire day basically in a state of profound "muddle-headedness." He exhibits no manifestaions of viral infection and is not concerned about his sanity, just his mental clarity.
Researching this, my lizard is concerned about hepatic encephalaoplaty. He figured he was in the clear with liver health because he's never noted yellowing of eyes, bruising easly, etc, but his mental state seems worryingly similar to the symptoms.
Besides immediate, total cessation of alcohol consumption until liver health re-ascertained (done), and scheduling another blood test (done), what sholud lizard be doing?
