Am I going to die?
About two to three years ago I bought some morning glory seeds. I can’t remember how many I ate, but I remember that I chucked most of them away. Anyway, I suffer from severe anxiety problems, and I have been worrying that I am going to die, because I remember that they weren’t organic and the package said “unsafe for human consumption”. But it happened such a long time ago, and nothing has happened to me, so should I be worried? Please, give me an honest answer, other places, like irc, had people just poke fun at me for worrying, but I have been up most of the night shaking because of this.

Re: Am I going to die?
Unsafe for human consumption meant that it has the potential for recreational abuse and the seed manufacturer is required to put that to try and deter people. You have absolutely no worries about the ingestion of morning glory seeds.

Thank you ever so much for the reply. I needed to hear that from someone. You have eased my anxiety a little, so thank you again.

You can also look at the experiences section under Ethnobotanicals for LSA Containing Seeds to get more information regarding the ingestion of things like morning gorly (MG) Seeds.

Re: Am I going to die?
Sometimes morning glory seeds are sprayed with a pesticide on the coating and that can cause vasoconstriction, nausea, headache, etc. when ingested. It's not carcinogenic, neurotoxic (at least not anywhere near the dose a human would consume at), or anything that could cause problems two years down the road. In fact in the two years since swiy has had the morning glory seeds, swiy has consumed a far greater amount of pesticides in swiy's regular meals.

OP - I would suggest that you may benefit from spending some time on this forum searching through threads about anxiety and the related conditions. It is something that most people have suffered from at some time in their lives and there is a great deal of information here that may help you overcome it. |

Re: Am I going to die?
No- of course it is always good to research before ingesting something, but if it happened in the past, 2-3 years ago as swiy says, any potential (rare, but always possible) harm from a substance such as morning glory seeds/LSA is long gone. Good luck with your anxiety- hope this helps.

Re: Am I going to die?
In the States, the Morning Glory with psychoactive substances sold over counter are covered with toxic substances and cannot be ingested. It is therefore recommended to grow them and harvest the seeds later. Morning Glory seeds are not best ingested as-is, anyways. Various chemical preparations are preferred.
As for the original thread author, the toxins are not lethal upon ingestion of the seeds for reasonable doses, and DEFINITELY are not lethal years later. Swim speaks from experience. The author notes his own anxiety may be a factor. Swim believes it is: Swim occasionally has bad reactions to drugs (including and mostly pharms. by rx.) and in extreme cases, he believes he is near death during said reactions. To fear this is not stupid, it is smart. Such a fear teaches us not to repeat potentially dangerous actions. So, the author is not stupid for worrying. But he does seem unwilling to accept that he is not dying from the seeds. Would swiy be relieved to hear that he is dying because of them? No one will confirm that; there is near zero probability it is true. The author SHOULD be comforted by those of us (like swim) who have also taken toxic Morning Glory seeds and live today. Please, take swim as an example and be comforted... |

Re: Am I going to die?
Thanks for the posts (especially the one stating there have been more chems on the foods I have eaten than the seeds, which has made me realize I've been over-reacting), I'll feel a lot better now; knowing it is just my anxiety makes the anxiousness easier to control.

Re: Am I going to die?
After hearing all of the scientific information testifying to the harmlessness of morning glory seeds, if you still find it hard to convince yourself that you aren't dying, then you are suffering from irrational fears. If so, you may want to see a psychiatrist about this issue.

Re: Am I going to die?
I have seen a psychiatrist, and she diagnosed me with OCD and depression. I know I can be annoying when I keep asking for reassurance that I am fine, and that I do ask some silly questions, but the fear that comes with OCD is really debilitating. I do not think that people would be quick to poke fun if they ever experienced OCD.

No, not you, but the moderator (no offence to the guy). Anyway, my psychiatrist recommended behavior modification therapy. But the method seemed pretty demeaning.

Re: Am I going to die?
Lol, sorry anyusername, but I'm surprised that it took as long as it did before someone finally made a comment about the thread title. Don't worry, it's all in good fun.
I also have OCD and I know what you're going through. It's definitely not fun, but sometimes you've just got to be able to laugh at yourself about it and realize just how irrational some of the fears/obsessions can be. I've had great success with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and it works much better than any medication IMHO. The methods really aren't demeaning at all, it simply involves exposing yourself to situations which cause anxiety and forcing yourself not to react to it (fight or flight response). I'd recommend giving it a chance; if it you decide that it's not right for you, you can discuss other means of treatment with your psychiatrist. |

Re: Am I going to die?
That’s ok. Anyways, I was having a discussion with a friend about sleeping habits, and I said that I generally sleep for twelve hours (nine normally, sometimes twelve), and he said that wasn’t normal. So I asked him what it could be a sign of, and he said some guy went to the doctor because he was sleeping twelve hours and the doctor diagnosed him with mercury poisoning. He was quick to say that I wasn’t poisoned, but this has worried me. Are my sleeping patterns a sign of mercury poisoning? And I am pretty sure mercury is banned as a pesticide here in the UK, but could it have been on the seeds? Am I just worrying about nothing again? I remember being told that long sleeping habits can also be a sign of depression.

My money would by on a sleep disorder- if there is something medically wrong, that is- and there very well may not be, as it may simply be a symptom of the other problems with which you are already diagnosed. Most sleep disorders are not usually life threatening, and happen quite gradually, but can be quite incapacitating over time- so if this pattern starts to cause problems (ie. sleeping for longer and longer times, sleep interferes with other activities, unable to wake up to an alarm or make and keep plans on a schedule) then it could be a sign of an easily treated but often stressful sleep disorder- sleep apnea, idiopathic hypersomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, abnormal sleep architecture- there are so many, and you won't know until you have an overnight "sleep study" or polysomnogram. But please don't worry too much- focus on dealing with your anxiety/OCD and other issues, and perhaps keep a sleep diary to track how much you are getting and how rested you feel, and if it becomes problematic, have it checked out to be sure. But it is definitely true that other mental health problems can cause excessive sleep, and it is also true that individuals can vary a lot as to how much sleep their body needs to function at its best. It could also be linked to depression, but many meds used for OCD also treat many (chemical) depressions, and in addition treating the OCD and anxiety can also help alleviate the situational depression that can come along with such conditions. Good luck to you! |

Re: Am I going to die?
Don't worry, I'm confident in saying that SWIYou're excessive sleeping has nothing to do with their morning glory seed experience several years ago. I've gone through periods where I slept for a long time (about 10-12 hours a day) every night as well, but I suspect it was due to being somewhat depressed during that time. Sometimes when your depressed, all you want to do is sleep.
I've also gone through the same obsessions about diseases and infections. Particularly if you have OCD, you may start to obsess about symptoms that are related to diseases you fear you may have. I've actually experienced completely psychosomatic symptoms of different diseases just from obsessing about them, only to find out that I didn't have them when I got tested by my doctor. I'd still highly suggest Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or at least discussing and pursuing some kind of treatment option with your psychologist. And really try not to worry about these kinds of things. I know it's hard, but it's really not worth the effort to spend so much time obsessing over these kinds of things. |

Re: Am I going to die?
When swim was in his early 20s he went thru a phase of complete paranoia of death, which then turned to paranoia of life, I think swims problem was here he was in his early twenties living in and out of his parents house, quitting jobs left and right, no steady girlfriend, always broke, always searching for something or somewhere to be, trying to escape the truth of his directionless life with any mind altering substance he could acquire , a handfull of morning glory seeds made swim dog sick(years ago), a bunch of nutmeg made swim completly delerious, swim is a little older now , he has a secure job he has kids and a wife and his thoughts of death and life are distant fears of a lost young man ,which is nothing swim is ashamed of ,human beings are physically, mentally and spiritually resilient beings, get set up, get secure, then experiment without anxiety, thoughts of death will be forgotten,
