Grapefruit juice potentiates codeine, but does it increase the chances of od ?

Hello all.

I found this on the world wide web >>>>

Grapefruit can have a number of interactions with drugs, often increasing the effective potency of compounds. Grapefruit contains naringin, bergamottin and dihydroxybergamottin, which inhibit the cytochrome P450 isoform CYP3A4 in the intestine. It is via inhibition of this enzyme that grapefruit increases the effects of buspirone (Buspar), carbamazepine, several statin drugs (such as simvastatin), terfenadine, felodipine, nifedipine, verapamil, estradiol, tacrolimus, dextromethorphan (significant only at recreational doses), benzodiazepines, and ciclosporin.[10][11][12][13][14] The effect of grapefruit juice with regard to drug absorption was originally discovered in 1989. However, the effect became well-publicized after being responsible for a number of deaths due to overdosing on medication.

Now this is my question (there are no stupid questions except asking if its monday when you already know it is !) if swim ingests say 200mg of codine without the juice and thats close to a critical dose would the same amount od said person if there is grapefriut juice involved (a few hours before) in the taking?

This might sound like a silly question but IDK.

Regards,

Me.

Re: Grapefruit juice potentiates codeine, but does it increase the chances of od ?

Assuming your question is theoretical (given the fact that 200mg is not nearly enough for most people to OD on), then the answer would be yes. Basically, gfj is believed to allow more codeine to be converted to morphine. If you were taking an amount of codeine that normally got converted to a level of morphine that was very, very close to OD, then GFJ would possibly lead to the creation of enough morphine to OD. However, grapefruit juice's effects on codeine are only very slight. Some people don't believe it potentiates at all.

Hi
Yes this is a totally theoretical question as are almost all of my posts on df.
I'm very interested to read that "Some people don't believe it potentiates at all" because I thought it was a hard and fast rule :S

from swims experience with GJG and codeine, swim doesnt think its quite as intese as that makes it out to be! with swims experience she had a normal dose for herself, and 2lt of yellow GFG 15 hours or so before, and she definatly felt a massive diffence and change! but swim also had been smoking MJ aswell, weither that lessend the feeling or not, swim doesnt know, but she doubts it!

swim guess's if one did exceed a large dose 400mg + plus GFG, it could have some negative effect, but everyones bodies r different once again, and some react different to others!
