Papaverine and other spasmolytics to ease opiate withdrawal symptoms?

I've been wondering about this lately. Do papaverine and other spasmolytics (e.g. drotaverine) counteract the stomach cramps associated with opiate and opioid withdrawal?

Re: Papaverine and other spasmolytics to ease opiate withdrawal symptoms?

I think you may have found a good solution. Cramps are involuntary contractions of muscles, and antispasmodic drugs have been used effectively to treat such contractions. Furthermore, spasmolytics are capable of alleviating contractions of smooth muscles. Smooth muscle forms the muscle layers in the walls of hollow organs such as the digestive tract (lower part of the oesophagus, stomach and intestines). Since the stomach is a smooth muscle, then spasmolytics could have a great potential for easing the cramps that accompany withdrawl.

Re: Papaverine and other spasmolytics to ease opiate withdrawal symptoms?

In my experience, drotaverine (at ~40 mg) is a very effective drug to alleviate stomach cramps. Papaverine is also used against gastrointestinal cramps. That's why I assumed that these would be somewhat useful in alleviating the stomach cramps caused by opiate withdrawal.
