United States: In August 1999, after a high profile campaign and Ketamine’s demonization as a 'date-rape' drug, Ketamine became a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States. Ketamine is federally illegal to possess without a license or prescription.

United Kingdom: Ketamine became a Class C drug from 1st January 2006 after rising concerns of abuse of the drug in a 2004/5 survey. Class C means that it's illegal to possess and to supply it. Possession can get you up to two years in prison and/or an unlimited fine. Supplying can get you up to 14 years in jail and/or an unlimited fine. Prior to Jan 1, 2006, Ketamine was not controlled in the UK under the Misuse of Drugs Act, making it legal to possess. However, sales and distribution were controlled under the Medicines Act making it illegal to sell or distribute without a license.

I think the same is true for Ireland but its nearly impossible to find any substantial proof on the net.

Canada: Until 2005, ketamine was considered Schedule 1 because it was "an analogue of phencyclidine (PCP), and is, therefore, captured as item 14 in Schedule I of the CDSA and item 14 in the Narcotic Control Regulations..."

However, as of 2005 it is listed specifically as a Schedule 1 drug under the CDSA. http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/...cn626-eng.html

Penalties for schedule 1 drugs in canada under CDSA: Possession, maximum 7 years imprisonment. Trafficking, maximum life imprisonment. Exportation, maximum life imprisonment. Production, maximum life imprisonment.

true , but life imprisonment, in Canada, is no more than 25 years, and most people get out after 1/3 of what they were comdemned for.
