Red face Anyone Got/Think Of A Good Way To Remove The Coating Off Zolpidem?

SWIM wants to know/find the best method to remove the outercoating of an 10mg Ambien (Zolpidem Tartrate). As his monkey in a dream had found that it was a pain to remove, trying to peels littles bits off without damaging the tablet. He though maybe a crafts knife kit with those sharp blades might help but he is broke ATM. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

SWIM Needs this information as his monkey loves insufflating intranasally.
And He dosn´t like the coating getting into his powder. (and nose).

Re: Anyone Got/Think Of A Good Way To Remove The Coating Off Ambien ?

Sanofi-Aventis designed the pill coating so that it would stick to unpulverized chunks of zoplidem tartrate to make preparing for insufflation more difficult. I've heard that generic versions do not (or not always) have this coating, but I cannot seem to find any sources that support or invalidate this.

I'm not sure how one would circumvent it, I've never cut into an ambien or its casing, so I'm not even sure what the coating is like (I get generic zolpidem now, anyway). But perhaps zolpidem tartrate preparations which don't have this protection are available for that monkey of yours.

Re: Anyone Got/Think Of A Good Way To Remove The Coating Off Ambien ?

well SWIStaples the coating is only a thin outer coating made from a polymer which is plastic like in nature. SWIM would think that it is sprayed onto the tablets as it is easy enough to peel off if SWIY is patient with it. SWIM was thinking somebody might know a way to just rub the coating off the tablet or other methods that take less time.

My bunny uses a dremmel tool that barely sands off the layer. swiy should try lightly sanding the pill.

just wipe it off with a wet paper towel or just suck the coating off. water is the key.

Though unpleasant, in swims experience sublingual administration is far superior to intranasal. Simply chewing the pill and sucking on its bitter clay juice will work just as well or better, be much less painful, and take less work than snorting those bad boys.

Re: Anyone Got/Think Of A Good Way To Remove The Coating Off Ambien ?

Swim gets really frustrated with that coating

Swim just crushes the pill, and carefully eats the coating, and insuffulates the remains.

Rub the pills down with a moist paper towel. Then dry off.

Re: Anyone Got/Think Of A Good Way To Remove The Coating Off Ambien ?

As SWIM wont risk ruining pills w/ anything wet, heres the best method(imo).

Tools: Pill cutter or razor blade, flat end tweezers(swiss army kniphe style)

-Cut the pill in half. If you use the pill cutter, it wont completely slice through the bottom of the pills coating. No reason a razor blade wont do the same but I havent needed to try it
-Separate the two halfs, each should now have a small portion of the coating peeled off
-Using the tweezers, start at the cut section of the pills top or bottom and carefully start peeling off the coating with the tweezers, do it slowly and gently, lifting up and away
-The top part of the pill should easily peel off in about 2 or 3 sections
-Next, pry up the perimeter coating at the ends and again, carefully and gently start peeling it off with the tweezers along the flat perimeter of the pill again, gently up and away
-Do the same for the other half

Presto, perfectly peeled zolpi. Commence the crush and blow.
