Psilocybe vs Amanita Mushrooms

A few years ago, SWIM had a huge dose of hand picked and brewed up psilocybe mushrooms with a friend, and SWIM remembers this as one of the most extraordinary experiences of his life.

Lately, SWIM has become very interested in psychoactive mushrooms and ethneogens in general, particularly for use to spiritual and shamanistic ends.

Since SWIM had this mind-blowing experience, the UK government, messed things up for SWIM by making psilocybin hard to obtain. This is annoying as he feels very ready to undertake the experience again. Okay, so they can be picked, but this kind of hassle isn't practical for SWIM, he wouldn't know where to go, it isn't the right season anyway, and plus, if SWIM got caught doing this these days, he'd be in serious trouble.

Now, there is always the possibility of SWIM obtaining some psilocybin spores, and growing them, however, before swim goes to these lengths, he is wondering what Amanita, which he has never tried, is like, and if Amanita delivers an experience comparable to that of psilocybin, however daunting it may be, then he at least has some idea of what he is in for, so, should SWIM just have a go at the Amanita instead?

This brings SWIM round to his question: If SWIM obtains some Amanita Muscaria, then what would SWIY be able to tell me about how the effects of Amanita compare and contrast, in general, to the effects of Psilocybin?

SWIMS concern arises in that he has noted from vendors of Amanita products that it is advisable to have experience in Psilocybin shrooms first, before progressing to this variety, which causes me to wonder why this is so.

Re: Psilo and Amanita Shrooms - Similarities and Differences?

As with all substances, it mainly depends on the user, but SWIM finds that Amanita mushrooms are more of a 'delerium' trip than a psychedelic one like with Psilocybe mushrooms. SWIM did experience OEVs on Amanitas, but they were more of a visual distortion-type thing, unlike the interesting patters and other hallucinations SWIM has on psilocybes.

Re: whats the difference?

The two types of mushroom you have described are COMPLETELY different.

The illegal psilocybin (cubensis strains etc.) mushrooms are psychedelics, comparable to LSD, Mescaline, 2C-B etc., and the legal Amanita Muscaria mushrooms are deleriants the active ingredient being Ibutonic Acid. The user must cook the mushroom to convert this to Muscimol and the trip is more akin to poisoning yourself into delerium.

The experience a person can recieve from Amanitas can often be very scary and/or upsetting and users often experience true hallucinations (they're unable to tell the difference between their hallucinations and reality). It is also quite common for users to forget they have taken the mushroom too, which could make the experience all the more frightening.

Also, the Amanitas bought from the web are rarely any good, if this is something SWIY wants to experience then I suggest he finds and picks his own.

Hope this helps.

Re: whats the difference?

So swiy is pretty much saying that if you want a good psychedelic trip then swim should go with the mushrooms containing psilocybin?

Yes. The two cannot be compared and Amanitas do not sound like they are worth it.

Re: whats the difference?

SWIM thinks that it is important to mention that the Amanita Muscaria is very toxic and potentially lethal. It is related to the Amanita phalloides which is otherwise known as the Death Cap mushroom. SWIM has heard people say that Amanita Muscaria is safe once it it prepared properly. However SWIM knows that this only reduces the toxicidy and it can still kill you.

According to SWIM Psilocybe mushrooms are far less toxic, and as far as SWIM is aware it is impossible to overdose on them (assuming SWIY has correctly identified them or SWIY as grown his own that is). However, since they impair the senses, SWIM doesn't drive or operate machinery when he takes magic mushrooms. SWIM always makes sure he is in a safe environment where he doesn't have to leave.
