Ethylone & Ethcathinone question

I'm a little confused. What are the differences of these two chemicals? I've read some people referring to ethylone as being the same thing as ethcat in other forums.

2-Ethylamino-1-phenylpropan-1-one (ethcathione)
2-ethylamino-1-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)propan-1-one(ethylone)

I could be wrong but looks like they have nearly identifcal subjective effects.

Re: Ethylone & Ethcathinone question

Chemically speaking, ethcathinone is different from ethylone how methcathinone is different from methylone and methamphetamine is different from MDMA.

Re: Ethylone & Ethcathinone question

Looks like you just answered your own question. Ethylone has the methylenedioxy ring while ethcathinone does not. Ethylone would be the bk(beta-keto) analog of MDEA while ethcathinone is the bk analog of N-ethylamphetamine.

Incorporating the methylenedioxy moiety, ethylone would probably have a reasonable amt of euphoria in comparison to the other.

While there may not be many direct comparisons between the two, there is plenty of info on each of these seperately. UTFSE.

Whoever said that has no clue what they're talking about - I'd avoid taking information from this source in the future.

Re: Ethylone & Ethcathinone question

Not to discredit the genius Shulgin as respect is incredibly high for him () but SWIM does think the whole methylone, ethylone, butylone naming was a fairly bad choice. (even ignoring the fact methylone & butylone had medicines named after them)

why?

Many drug names are often a combination of words from their full chemical name:

e.g
Alpha-Methyl-PHenylEThylAMINE = AMPHETAMINE

Below are two examples which are purposefully INCORRECT [and not the real derivation] but demonstrate the possible & unsafe confusion. (!)

n-METHYL-cathinONE = METHYLONE (!Incorrect)

n-ETHYL-cathinONE = ETHYLONE (!Incorrect)

There are millions of drug names out there but considering N-ethyl & N-methylcathinone are clearly very important beta-ketone derivatives to be aware of when studying beta-ketone-phenylethylamines it simply seems unsafe that you can very easily derive the names methylone & ethylone from the incorrect chemicals. There is also very little in the name that is suggestive of the important 3,4-methylenedioxy moiety => (possibly only the YL part of name derived from 1-Benzo[1,3]dioxol-5-YL ???)

Again SWIZ has a lot of respect for Shulgin and will forever be in awe of his amazing work but the names methylone, ethylone are just not good.

Re: Ethylone & Ethcathinone question

Shulgin had absolutely nothing to do with the name "ethylone." I have no clue where people got the idea that he created the trivial names for these beta-ketones, save methlyone.

When he was emailed with some questions regarding these compounds, a couple years back, these names were already in usage. He at first did not notice the naming problem, then he said in a further communication that these names did not work.

In fact, I believe that I am the stupid individual to blame for the spurious name "ethylone," though when I coined it it, I did so with the explicit caveat that I did not know whether the naming was correct, but merely that I figured this is what people would be calling it.

If my memory is serving me correctly, methylone is a no-go as well, as it turns out the name has already been in use for many years for a different chemical entirely. I'll have to go spend some time searching around a different forum to get the exact details correct on this issue. Suffice it to say that any blame aimed at Sasha for these names is misdirected.
