Storing - How to Store Mushrooms

hey, I wanned to know what's the best way of storing mushrooms after
picking them. I was thinking drying them and then refrigerating
[freezing] them. How long will they last like that?

Is there a better way?

if you dry them out propery. (so that they are snap when you try and bend them) using a dessicant and then put them in an airtight bag in the freezer they will last for years

SWIM is probably getting around 5-6 grams of cubes tonight.. But he doesnt wanna trip tonight. So would he be able to put them in a ziploc bag and squeeze the air out, then put it in the corner of a closet somewhere and hold potency?

Are the cubes fresh or dry? If they are fresh then swiy would do good to dry them out as soon as possible to prepare them for storage. If they are dry then swiy can just store them in the plastic bags.

Then they should be fine stored in the bag, though a glass container would be better.

Once properly dried, Psilocybian mushrooms should retain their potency indefinitely. One collection of Psilocybe semilanceata from 1861 in England was analyzed and found to be fully potent. More recent experiments have shown mushrooms to remain active for at least 8 years when properly dried and stored.

Once the mushrooms are dry, place them into airtight glass container with a fully sealable lid, and put the container in a dark place. Some psilophiles grind the mushrooms, if you do so, weight the outcome. It is very hard to tell how many mushrooms worth of powder you're taking by just eyeballing a dose. One bonus of grinding your mushrooms is that you can ensure even potency across a large batch. While one P. cubensis mushroom might have a significantly higher potency than another...if you grind them up and mix them together, all measured doses will have the same potency.

Hi, lets try this again, sorry about the first post.

Swim required some mushrooms but he said he doesn't want to take them until the end of december when he is done with finals because he likes to prepare for the trip. Swim is wondering if there is anyway of preserving the mushrooms for that amount of time (slightly over a month) in a way which will prevent them from molding etc. They will be about 1/4 oz. and dried, he is not sure yet what strain they are. For only that amount of time, they'll keep fine in the bag in a drawer or
something, as long as SWIY makes sure to protect them from extreme
heat or moisture, without any noticable potency loss.

For longer term storage, its better to seal them in something airtight with
a dessicant pack (those vacuum sealer things work really well) and put
them in the freezer. SWIM's kept them for years this way, and they were
as good as when they were first dried...

Swim just got a half oz of shrooms. Swim is planing on eating them. Not all at once tho. How would be the best way to store them?

Granted they're dry, wrap them up in newspaper, place in a sealed lunch-box and refrigerate. If SWIY intends to keep them for longer than a couple of weeks, the freezer might be a better option.

^^ SWIM concurrs. If dry, break the boomers into small pieces put them into a plastic bag, press out all the air by rolling the bag up - seal and freeze. Heat and oxygen are the main enemies of potency - fresh or dry. SWIM typically double bags them.

Im after a little bit of advise. What is the best way of storing mushroom? Am i right that drying them out then freezing them is he way forward or can you freeze fresh ones? Ive tried searching for the answers but I cant seem to find a straight answer!

Straight answer - do not freeze fresh mushrooms. They must be thoroughly dried first regardless of storage method. They should be sealed airtight and stored in the freezer if possible. UTFSE for "drying mushrooms" brought me over 100 results...

As with other fruits, mushrooms can be stored in the fridge or dried for a decent amount of time.

So would it be okay to put them in a tub and then in the fridge or would a dark place be okay in a tub.

Fridge would be much better. The must be dried otherwise they will rot in a dark cool place.

Ok so sorry if i sound stupid, they are fresh, so i just put them in a tub then into the fridge. Shall i lid the tub or not and does it need any air holes. Thanks

No! No! No! Did I say No!?

Storing LBM's (Little brown Mushrooms) in the fridge will result in a mess, & unless living alone will result in either unwanted questions or unexpected trips - air dry them, & when fully dessicated store them in an airtight jar. Unless being eaten fresh drying is essential if your bear wants to preserve them for even a couple of days without their integrity (&usefulness!) being compromised.

Thanks for the reply. Would they stay fresh untill saturday or would it be best to dry them. How would they be air dried, they were left over night on top of the fridge and they have gone kinda dry, should they be put straight into a jar or is there a certain way of drying them. Swim dosen't really have a jar bigger enough for 350, is there any other way.

Ok guys, change of plan. Swim decided to dry them out and spread them on kitchen roll across the window sill untill he gets a fan later and found white margets and black little jumping creatures in them. How should he wash them, then dry them. Some of them had gone a little rooten like to. Please reply

Been soaking mushrooms in water for the last 30mins and the little black things are still alive,swim is thinkinh of throwing all the 390 mushrooms in the bin.

It is quite simple to store fresh mushrooms in the fridge. Roll them well in damp paper towels and put them in air tight plastic bags giving them an air exchange/re-moisten every day. Swims kept fresh boomers for a week and a half that way. As long as their own moisture is absorbed by the damp towel they don't get mushy.

It is already too late. If mushrooms are infested there is nothing one can do.

They were likely already infested when picked.

For future reference, drying would be the best way to preserve them. I assumed they would keep much like regular mushrooms, but Micklemouse stated otherwise.

Remember that Liberty Caps, which A Certain Mouse guesses is the Shroom being picked given the original posters alleged location, are a lot smaller than many other mushrooms. Too tiny, too little fibre to moisture to successfully keep refrigerated. As for the "infestation", just let em dry - as the 'Shrooms dry & shrink the maggots & flies will soon leave & die. No need to chuck 'em - when fully dried, just pick the shrooms off the paper, leaving the dead maggots behind, or so I'm told...

Yeah, drying is the only way, and even then you could risk getting sick if bad bacteria has taken hold.

Swim has only dealt with cubesis, which are obviously much larger.
Preserving shrooms for storage is best done by drying, but when dried, some of the the psilocin is broken down, making them less potent. (If you're a shroomer, you know that the other chemical, psilocybin, is much more stable.)
Swim trips so much harder on fresh mushrooms.
