Finally found THE SOLUTION... mineral oil (the kind used for a laxative). Keeps it moist a long time under all conceivable conditions, really helps prevent that end of party nasal pain. Wet a finger good & apply liberally (it's harmless), sniff a little up into your lower sinuses. Just don't do it until swiyyou're finished up for the night, unless you want a gooey mess in the lower part of your nose...

Couple other nose tips from SWIM:

* Don't neglect the nose until partying is over. Do flush it out gently with something every once in awhile, & don't be afraid to blow (just go easy, this is when it's most susceptible to bleeding).

* At end of night after cleaning nose, use 12-hour nasal decongestant, but only if congestion is causing trouble sleeping (the stuff has a nasty rebound effect and can be "addictive" if used regularly).

* Regular cola fans may want to get a script for some Flonase, which helps keep the nose clearer in a general, long-term sense.

* If experiencing nose pain (while blowing) a day or two after partying, there may be a loose scab or chunk of dried cut stuck in the nose. Investigate (in private, of course). Often these are easy to loosen and remove, bringing fast relief.

* Finally, need it be said... give your nose time to recover, don't overdo the cola. Unless, of course, you can afford to and really want to. Then enjoy. Edited by: Nicaine

For those with Sinus issues, this is one of the best non-drug cures


Get 2 cups of uncooked white rice


Place it in one of those white tube (sport) socks


Tie the sock closed so the rice is bunched up in one end


This is where you need to use common sense and caution - Microwave times vary greatly! Microwave the thing for about 1 to 1/2 minutes.. take it out and test it. Hold it in your hands for about 30 seconds and make sure its not too hot.. It should be very warm, pleasantly warm...


Drape this over your nose and eyes, and lay back for awhile till its cool.. take it off and wait about 5 minutes... Dont you feel better now?

congestion comes from your sinuses, swiy's probably developing some kind of sinus infection, hence the congestion. Cocaine is a vasoconstrictor, but the type of clogging shouldn't last. If it does it means a form of infection, a form of sinusitis if you will. one could try washing out your sinuses with a mixture of lukewarm water and a little dissolved baking soda, or salt. the feeling takes a little while to get used to, but is actually quite refreshing. What you're aiming for is filling your nostril slowly, with your head tilted back, and filling the sinus cavities, while breathing through the mouth. You can let the water drip out of the other nostril.
to do this you need a vessel with a sort of spout for your nostril, such vessels are sold for this purpose as it is pretty common in yoga, they're called jal-neti vessels from what I can remember.
Really, because of the cuts in cocaine, thouse with sensitive sinuses should wash out their nostrils / sinuses 15 minutes after insufflation. The product sould be dissolved by then, and if it isn't it's probably not very good for you.

And ugh, the reference to salt water reminded swim of his encounters with strep throat where he had to gargle warm & salty water to find instant relief. Not very fun, though it did help clean out the gunk from swim's throat...

it's just making a solution of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and purified water ( filtered with a charcoal filter, distilled, boiled, or using physiological serum), at room temperature or lukewarm so that it's not as hard on the sinuses, and spraying / eye droping / neti vesseling this into the sinuses, via the nose, with the head tilted back, and pronouncing a strong consonnant like "ke" ( why doctors ask one to do this is less clear, swim guesses it's linked to reaching deeper into the sinuses, but fails to see any major change- or maybe it's just a conspiracy to make patients look foolish). Once the sinuses are filled the water is drained through the mouth and nose.
this is how it's done, and how it works is just that the bicarbonate is slightly abrasive and cleans pretty much like soap. You can add a little salt to the rinsing mix as well, to make it even stronger, but swim finds sodium bicarbonate alone to work wonders. Salt and sodium bicarbonate rinses are sold commercially for such purposes, but are really easy to make.

Try this:

end of your run or just as the ole sniffer is starting to say "no more" get an icepack and apply it to your forehead and partially covering your nose bridge.
Then suck on an ice cube and have it touch the inside of the root of your mouth. And lastly get a small piece of ice and lie back with your head back further than level and slowly inhale the ice through nasal passages. Swim does this with great success. This 1-2-3 combo release all the swelling in and near your nasal passages to allow for a very sufficient cleaning.
This can also be great if you want to extend the party.

Aright, here goes

Q: why do we administer cocaine by insufflation
A: the mucus membrane of our nose consists of blood rich epithelial tissue. Any small lipophilic molecule can penetrate the epithelials and absorbed rapidly to the blood stream. It is thus a very pottent way of reaching high drug blood plasma levels rapidly.

Q: So any drug can be used like that? Why specifically cocaine?
A: Actually no, not any drug. Our nose is knows that it cant let any particle reach those tender epithelial. It thus secretes mucus (a water based mixture) to protect them. Any substance that enters the nose gets trapped in the mucus. BUT if the substance is water soluble it will get dissolved in the mucus eventually reach the epithelial s and get in the blood stream.

Q: So how do we get cocaine to be water soluble?
A: Water is a polar solvent, as a rule of thumb polar solvents dissolve polar compounds, cocaine base is...well a base i.e. it has a ph of over 7 (7.2 to be precise), you can react it with an acid to form a salt, and salts are polar and thus water soluble. The cocaine hydrochloride salt is exceptionally soluble in water, just 0.5ml of water can dissolve 1gr of cocaine.

Q: so why does the damage happen to the nose?
A: there are several reasons actually. For starters there are the cuts, crapy substances of unknown qualities that can actually mechanically damage the tender mucus membrane. Even if cocaine is fairly pure due to rushed manufacturing excess hydrochloric acid can remain trapped in the cocaine hydrochloride crystals. The acid is corrosive and damages the nose membranes. More over some of the hydrochloride that is in salt form in the cocaine molecule will react with free water protons to form hydrochloric acid. Finally cocaine is a both an anesthetic and a potent vasoconstrictor.

Q: So all these facts affects my flamingos nose
A: The corosion due to HCL acid formation, the mechanical and chemical damage from adulterants, the hypoxia due to vasoconstriction and the fact that due to anesthasia pain cant be felt when cleaning the nose (by hand or whatever) are combined to damage the mucus membranes. Chronic abuse WILL cause ulcerations and finaly a deviated nose septum.

Q: doesnt it heal?
A: Actually it does, our body is very clever, smell is of paramount importance in the survival of any mammal so the nose epithelial s are one of the very few type of epithelial s that can be repaired. The nose mucus membrane is cluttered with stem cells that can become epithylials to repair a small amount of damage. But the repair pottential is very limited, using cocaine to often too much will exceed the body's ability to form new mucus membrane. Even so the number of stem cells is finite, and damage to the nose ocures not only by cocaine but by infections, air particles, scratces caused by hardened mucus (bugers), fingers, etc etc. Cocaine use definately doesnt help.

Q: Yeah but my flamingo likes cocaine, can i do anything to help?
A: There are several methods beside complete abstinence actually:
* Always perform an acetone wash to your cocaine, this will remove some adulterants and will definitely rid of any excess acid that is trapped by a rushed proses at the manufacturing point
* Do not use cocaine TOO frequently, or too much, the benefits of that are numerous besides letting your body to properly heal your nose before damaging it again. Using cocaine to frequently is like scratching an open wound. Once in a while abstain completely for more than 3-4 weeks also.
* After the end of a cocaine session use a weak saline solution to clean your nose. I.e dissolve a level teaspoon of table salt in a glass of warm water. Then inhale just a little spray of that water. Not much is needed, dont go crazy with that
* Buy some vitamin E capsules, puncture them and drip the vit E oil on your little finger or a cotton ear cue. VERY GENTLY cover the inside of your nose with the oil. Remember cocaine is an anesthetic, you wont be able to properly gauge pain after cocaine use and you might scratch your nose.
* Crash up some tomato and ad some of the juice to your nose. It has some pottent anti oxidants as well

Just stopping in to add a tidbit...

SWIM had been putting Burt's Bees Res-Q ointment in the nasal cavities each night in an effort to maintain her nose, and had moderate success. Did a bit of research, and found that Vitamin E oil was often recommended. Luckily, SWIM had a bottle of Vitamin E oil from trying to get rid of some old scars, and put a droplet of the oil up each nose with a Q-Tip.

And it works amazingly, amazingly well. No matter how much cocaine SWIM did the previous night, the Vitamin E makes it so that there is virtually no pain or anything the next day.

The Vitamin E oil SWIM is using is from the Pure & Basic Company, 1.01 fl. oz (or 30 ml) is $10 USD, but SWIM definitely thinks that that high price is worth it, when considering choosing between her nose and a few extra bucks every few weeks.

SWIM doesn't remember exactly where it's available -- she got it at either just a typical drugstore like Walgreens or the CVS... maybe got it at a beauty supply store? Really cannot remember, so sorry. But it also can be easily be ordered online.
