Guitar Hero LSD-like effect.

For the swiys out there that play guitar hero.

Swim is sure you've all experienced it. Swiy plays Guitar Hero for hours and hours and when swiy finally looks away from the screen after their day long ghero binge the walls and everything else start to stretch up and down producing an effect reminescent of some type of hallucinogen.

Swim regularly experiences this when playing Guitar Hero but it is much more pronounced when swim is really stoned. Kinda trippy, kinda annoying.

Anyway, any thoughts on this strange effect on the eyes Guitar Hero produces?

Motion Aftereffect is a well documented and explained phenomenon relating to the adaptation of the foveal motion to compensate for excessive singular-direction movement. Robert Addams noted in the late 1800s that after staring at a waterfall for an extended period of time, his eyes would create illusions with stagnant objects. After watching the waterfall he noted that the stationary rocks alongside it appeared to be moving upwards. Simply stated, this is the result of exhausted cortical cells. The theory and effect is called the 'Motion Aftereffect' based on the now well known 'Waterfall Illusion'. Motion adaptation allows our eyes to keep well-focused track of moving objects, and it is manipulated by excessive singular-direction motion like Guitar Hero or a waterfall.

Re: Guitar Hero LSD-like effect.

Shampoo pretty much cleared it up. It's the same mechanism the well-known PC "hallucinogen" works.

I dont get this guitar hero thing..... driving simulators i can understand, flight simulators i can get..... but instrument simulators ?

It's a hell of a lot easier to play Guitar Hero. A real guitar requires endless hours of practice just to get something simple done. Guitar Hero is easy, it's 5 buttons. A real guitar has, I dunno, more than a dozen frets and 6 strings.

Do you understand the desire to feel like you just saved the day in an FPS? Well... how 'bout the desire to feel like a rock star with no practice required?

Im sure its fun and feels good to simulate playing a difficult guitar solo or composition - but even playing something basic after hours of hard work on an actual instrument will leave the person with a level of satisfaction on an entirely different level.

If someones willing to put time into something in the first place then why not make it something productive ? Dreaming is great - but making dreams a reality is part of what life is all about.

And for the saving the day in a first person shoot em up i can understand why one would stick to simulations - as taking a real array of weaponry into the public and unleashing hell might have some serious negative consequences. lol.

Re: Guitar Hero LSD-like effect.

Just because you can also legally do what a video game is based on, does not mean the video game isn't worth playing. At the end of the day, they are simply two different things. One is a video game. You really don't "put time into it" as you said. You might spend 20, 30, or even 100 hours playing the game. And that's for the entirety of your ownership of said game. Those hours might be spread over weeks or months. If you want your money's worth and time's worth out of a real guitar, you're going to spend a whole lot more time on it. It might be hard work that pays off in the end, but it's not the same thing. And that's exactly what video games are about: doing something in a simulated environment that you can't do in reality. In this case, it's being a world-class rockstar in a half hour. Just because you can apply to West Point doesn't mean Risk isn't a fun game to play.

Re: Guitar Hero LSD-like effect.

Is this thread about the visual aftereffect of Guitar Hero or about whether it is a "good" or a "bad" game?

I actually think it could be a blend if drugs are really any different from any other simulated reality....theres the uhhh consumption putting up that disk and turning it on.....the come up, waiting for it to load, and then about to press start....then there is when you actually play, you peak for a while....then it gets boring and you come down......then tomorrow you do it again.

Re: Guitar Hero LSD-like effect.

Playing a variety of video games (especially those w/ constantly moving screens can produce this effect). i believe the color scheme in GH and it's other GH titles make the effect more easily noticed.

Playing guitar hero is like owning a Virtual pet. all the satisfaction of doing something w/ no responsibility or duties required to get good at your art. As someone who's played a real guitar for over 10 years, I find that playing too much GH actually hurts my head and makes playing my real guitar much more difficult also makes me impatient. make sure if you play lots of GH (on a side note) make sure you streach your wrists, and take some eye brakes. Many have reported having "sore" eyes and a pitcher from the Detroit Tigers actually really hurt himself playing too much guitar hero.

Great game I noticed the eye effect you speak of, i don't consider it anything like LSD (at least what my friend described LSD as) but it's something.

Re: Guitar Hero LSD-like effect.

Yeah I get that all the time. It also works with Frequency.

There is an LSDSpiral proggy out there that will also cause some interesting effects. I also made a screensaver once that makes everything wave in a similar fashion, but haha dunno where it went. Also the pinwheel one is cool - ya stare at this big spiral for like a minute then look at a wall and a pinwheel/flower forms on your vision. Look around for em
