Where does smoke go?

If person A smokes (tobacco or marihuana, for example) in room B, which is fairly sealed and features a vent in the ceiling, where does the smoke actually go? Does it drift until it finds a cranny that can take it further up, or does it seep into the walls and ceiling? If mostly the latter, how bad is this phor the room (resale conditions, general insulation integrity, etc., etc.)? I have the same questions with cars, too, if answers differ.

Re: Where does smoke go?

Smoke is an aerosol consisting of small solid and liquid particles suspended in air. Although it initially rises from a cigarette, that is due to the high temperature, when it cools to room temperature it is about the same density as the surrounding air so it will not keep on rising indefinitely.

Given time it will condense out on the walls, ceiling, furnishings Etc. If you've ever had to paint the ceiling of a house that has been used by a heavy smoker you will know what I mean.

It's possible to clean most surfaces, but it can be a lot of work. Walls and ceilings can be cleaned with sugar soap, and curtains and carpets can be cleaned in the normal way.

It's really best to get some form of forced air extraction with a fan or similar to avoid the build up of smoke deposits if you can.
