Effects - Please explain the Salvia divinorum trip. Is it horrible?

I just want to know why in erowid does it say that many people don't like the experience that salvia gives and also I want to know if those complaints are only because people don't like crazy visuals or is it a horrible experience, could someone explain this to me in detail.(I have never done salvia and want to be able to look foward to the trip and like it because those mindbending visuals I hear about sound really fun)

Incidentally, Salvia, in my experience, has nothing to do with 'crazy visuals'.

But onto swiy's questions. It's a mix of both. People are normally not ready for the insane experience that is salvia. Even experienced trippers can be scared because it's very different from normal psychadelics. It puts the user out of control and in a hectic world, in which the body naturally reacts...terrified.

but that's assuming that a user trips that hard (which there's no way to tell until it's tried).

The other aspect is the physical effects. Many people feel a discomfort from salvia since it doesn't touch any of your feel-good receptors. It usually makes the user warm and even more usually...sweaty. If the trip was a bad trip, the afterglow can feel pretty uncomfortable...things like feeling an annoying fuzziness to paranoia.

It entirely depends on the user.

If you want to completely know how salvia is, just do it... You aren't going to die, and it only lasts 5 mins or so, so just buy it and do it. SWIM's girlfriend and her friend did it with SWIM the other day, they have no knowledge of it, and SWIM's GF was completely gone, and she didnt remember any of it, and her friend ended up laughing for 5 mins straight and had an awesome time and thanked SWIM for "giving me that great experience." From what SWIM experienced on Salvia, its pretty much nothing like what anyone else says happens to them. I'm sure the salvia feeling is the same for everyone, but what you see and what happens is totally different, of all the times SWIM has done it, it's never been the same, and the visuals make no sense at all. Moral of the story: It's proven to not be toxic, buy some 15x and smoke it.. If you have a bad trip, don't do it again. Don't read too much into it cuz SWIM was real scared, but after he "broke through" the first time, its really fun. Peace


Oh and to answer your question, for SWIM, he smoked it, one hit, held it in and exhaled when he saw colors flowing on the wall. After exhalation, SWIM felt tingly and all the walls of his apartment fell down and turned into complete sky and saw a rainbow and fell through the couch into another demention.. thats about the best SWIM can explain it.

I would suggest some caution, as people have been known to do crazy/stupid things. An example from the thread above:

She felt a resistance and an "anger" from the feminine salvia entity at her actions but didn't want to go with the gravity so began running. At this point she noticed one of her friends appear (later she found out that the friend had just taken his hits, odd that he showed up in her salvia space after smoking, I thought) but she kept running. She saw these "bubbles, but not bubbles" that made everything that she saw and everything that existed. She kept running and the voice got angry at her. Suddenly she saw Nothing. The Void. An empty black space. She stopped, terrified. The voice got very angry at her and she got shocked by what she saw. She doesn't remember the rest of what happened, but tells me to this day that sight stays in her mind. She doesn't feel that she should have seen what she saw, the edge of reality and the total Void.

As an aside, she said her friends told her she started running towards the street and suddenly stopped right before the road. Shortly after that a truck came barreling down the road. I had a theory that the salvia allowed her to see her personal future considering her current actions and that he future would have turned into the Void if she had continued the direction she went, so the Goddess only got angry with her because she nearly got killed. Crazy stuff.

This doesn't happen to many people, but it can happen so care is warranted, at least the first time. What I'd suggest is:

• Have a sober sitter if possible (although many people do without for SD)
• Don't do it anywhere dangerous (like near a road)
• Don't use very strong extract like 40x for the first time. 5x is enough for the first try.

It's not a horrible experience, but its very confusing and can be alarming if you are not ready for it (and trust me, first time you "cross over" you will NOT be ready for it).

If you are looking for a feel-good high or a buzz, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a very deep and introspective other-worldly experience, then Salvia might just be for you.

It's not to be toyed with, but I encourage you to try it for youself and see what you think. Take a deep hit and hold it as long as possible. You might have to play with strength and dose to find your lever as sensitivity varies wildly.

How to describe salvia? Hmm...

It tastes peculiar, like some sort of bunk weed one might have been sold in their naive days. It isn't particularly harsh to smoke but the taste doesn't agree with everyone. The effects will take a few seconds to kick in after a successful toke from the pipe or bong. Many people take a hit and immediately take another thinking that it's not working. Believe me, it will happen!

The experience itself isn't horrific or anything but it can be highly disorientating in that the onset seems so instant. Visual fields will be altered. Many people report a physical sensation similar to "pins and needles". One may feel like they are sweating buckets when in reality they are not. That's one worth remembering. There can also be a gravitational effect where you may feel like you're being pushed to one side by some unexplainable force. A high dose may bring about "white light" visuals where any physical side effects become irrelevant because one reaches a state of dissociation.

The whole experience lasts 5-10 minutes proper with some possible minor side effects for about twenty minutes thereafter. As has been stated, salvia won't kill you but certain respects must be paid. Not really a euphoric high, more like a temporarily unique perspective of sorts.

swim smoked some today and to my surprise it didn't work all swim got was a mild high for around 10-15 mins it felt like swim was going to start seeing and feelling things but it never got there. swim smoked alot of salvia and many tokes as well but nothing happened(smoked from a pipe) let swim give the description swim bought some for ###$ and it really didn't have a distinct smell but there was alot of it and it was dry, so that being said can someone explain what went wrong?

philosopher price and source discussion are not allowed. Swiy should make sure he's using the proper technique for smoking salvia, plenty of threads on it around. Swiy could also be a hard head, who finds it hard to breakthrough, in which case swiy will have trouble getting the full experience no matter what.

SWIM suggests using a bong so as to get a nice big hit all at once. Lots of little tokes is positively NOT the way to go with Salvia, SWIY wants one big one.

Keep trying as the experience is very rewarding.

Heed nature boys comment regarding invisible forces. SWIM often get sucked backwards through a vortex or get swept away by a massive (sometimes but not always) invisible wave. Can be very alarming but try to go with it as fighting it makes it quite uncomfortable.

Had a friend do salvia who experienced a NDE a couple years back.
He recently did salvia and fought it hard, he thought he was dying again.
He couldn’t sleep that night.

Absolutely. Especially when becoming an object. The complete ability to have absolutely no human emotion, thought, vision or anything. SWIM doesn't want to say that it was like "seeing" the scenery that he was in...because that implies processing the material of vision.....swim was just there....no thoughts. Quite an amazing experience....very teaching. Only happened once to swim....that and a few other things made it his most incredible drug experience...ever.

But most of SWM's trips are as pianoman describes it.

i took salvia for the first time acouplr weeks ago. i used extra strength and i took a massive toke. it was one of ,if not the strongest drug ive ever taken. i wouldn't give up the experience. i astral traveled among other things too bizzare to get into here. i recommend a sitter and be prepared to be confused. its nothing like acid or mushrooms. more like old fashioned PCP, before they made the proper chemicals hard to get. start small, not60x extract. i have some 10x extract and i believe illtry some now-hey its legal- ~Peace~ Rockbottom---be careful

Swim's half dozen salcia experiences have always yielded sour results.
The first was mildly interesting. Upon standing, swim was constantly pulled different directions as gravity itself seemed to be looking for its own bearings.
Most of the other times after this experience sucked. They were mostly done with weed and/or DXM.
Swim's body, from the second experience on, would always feel a terrible vibrating-pinching feeling through out while using salvia. CEVs or OEVs were few and far between. Disappointing and odd results.

swim just smoked salvia yesterday after a LONG break from a strange trip that brought a new respect to the drug. anyways for swim, he has learned he CANT have a sitter, it makes him paranoid and angry if someone says something that does completely agree with what he is thinking, even saying "what?" to him while he is trying to describe what is happening to him. so try it the first time with a sitter, and if you get paranoid or feel uncomfortable and you think it might be from their presenece, try it solo.

I wouldnt call it so much a trip, as an intense sense of confusion, mixed with fits of hysterical laughter. As for the "Is it horrible?", I remember at the time, shortly after the peak of the high, saying to a friend, that it isnt something I'd like to do very often; having said that, I would gladly do it hundreads of times. Be prepared for tingling feelings in your body, and minor fasination with the smallest of things. You don't so much see things, but imagine them things to be something thy are not, if you catch my drift(I'm sure you dont). For first time go for about x15.

When he came back his friends were laughing at him because he dropped the pipe, started staring at his friend's dresser then curled up in a ball on the floor covering his head with his arms.

Don't mean to judge, but its sort of messed up of swiy's friends to just be laughing at him when he is obviously in distress. I can just imagine such a scene being shown on a youtube video somewhere, given the types of people who tend to post such things. I do hope swiy has better trip sitters on the next occasion he takes any psychedelic!

Swim thinks the trip all depends on what is going on in the persons subconscious at the time, and of course the setting. From reading Tihkal, the authors belive that the drug itself is not directly responsible for the visions and states of mind that one can achieve, but the change in chemistry happens to "open doors" and lets the subconscious mind flood into the conscious.

The authors are arguibly a couple of the most well informed in terms of psychedelics so I want to lead twords their side, and as they point out, everything that happens when one takes any psychedelic can happen without the use of drugs at all amazingly enough.

Imagine standing on a carpet. Then imagine unknowingly having that carpet ripped out from beneath SWIY's feet. Then imagine falling back onto another carpet only to have it ripped out from beneath your feet again and just when you think that's going to happen for a while, you fall into a deep dark hole instead of landing on another carpet.

Now, it can be scary, happy, ecstatic, mindblowing, revelationary, and any other number of adjective, but there's one thing for sure - If SWIY does it right and has good salvia, there is no way to know what to expect. It is crazy and unpredictable; definitely not a substance for an unexperienced tripper.

Not to scare you, because it can be an absolutely astounding experience, but be warned, you may not get what you are expecting, but then again, you may get something completely new and undescribeable except to yourself - which are the experiences we live for!

If SWIY thinks they're not ready, maybe try a very small dose, or a lesser strength extract. Otherwise, get a trip-sitter (yes, this is a must!), and see what happens.

swim had a buddy last nite try some salvia for the first time. swim has never had a bad experience with it, but has heard of the "bad trip". well, swim packed a bong full of it and gave it to him. he really enjoyed the first hit. laughing and sayin how he could see the edge of reality. swim asked him if he wanted to go over that edge. he said yes. so swim packed him another one while still in his stuper. he cleared it and put his head back laughing outta control. now. this is like a 62 yr old man. to swim, it was hilarious. but in only moments, things went from funny, to really really bad. swim could tell that he was scared and wanted out! he started to try to stand up so swim stopped him. he was speakin in tounges because nothin would come out rite. swim could tell that he was tryin to say help or hold on. then, he put swim in a headlock! swim was shittin his britches! swim got outta the headlock and went strate to a hug(initiated by buddy). he justed hugged me like a little child, cryin, sayin please hold on to me, dont let me go. swim kept tryin to tell him that he would be back and it would be over, but he didnt hear me. when he finally got back, he said he'd never smoke it again. and swim told him of his actions and he was really embaressed. anyway, swim thinks he'll stick to minor stuff now. what a crazy experience.
